View Full Version : Flowing 3 Fluids Into a Container
DizzyJ 12-24-2006, 03:14 PM While I have Maya Unlimited (7), I haven't used Fluid effects at all yet and have done very little with particles. And now I have a project that requires pouring 3 fluids into a simple container (an extruded octagon). From what I've read about Maya Fluids (in the Maya Unlimited Features book), you can't mix multiple fluids. Is there a work-around or is there a good way of doing this with particles?
What I'm envisioning is three flows of liquids (most likely liquid gold, silver and a black metal) coming into the top opening and splashing around the edges and each other as the container fills.
Thanks for any tips or links

This can be done with particles, but you will not get what I would be satisfied with. I would use RealFlow.

Yeah, use Realflow or Flowline (is it even out yet? is it going to be?).

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, the budget won't allow RealFlow, so I may have to come up with a new concept. Ah, creative challenges :p

here is a sug:
a) create 3 containers for your 3 materials
b) create a 4th container such that the3 containers are in contact to the 4th one
c) write a mel expression which would loop through the 3 material container's exiting base get the values, average them and set them to the 4th container.
if you do it right you will get the effect that when they density exit from the 3 containers, it will appear in the 4th one mixed, based on some averaging you do. There is a slight problem of discontinuity you might get and that is something you might need to fake out and massage the values.
and yes the 3 containers need to be open at the point of exit...
you could try to use fluid emitters the same way but you might get sluggish results at first becuase when you emit into a fluidbox especially density it takes a few frames before it moves, that is you the get and set method works, dont forget to average vlocity too, also try to keep the settings for all the 4 containers similar as possible.
hope it helps...

hey darktding,
Thanks. That may prove beyond my limited knowledge of dynamics and MEL scripting, but it is definitely worth a try. Projects like this serve to teach me how to do things as much as generate content right now, so this should be well worth doing.

Hello, what about Glu3d?? This prove to be an excellent perfect budget happy solution as least it has been for me before I got RF4. The demo at 3dalliens.com works great, and you can have 3 meshes pouring into a cup and mixing. Try Glu3d. Couldn't be easier to use. And creates excellent meshes.

Nah, they're not licensing Flowline to US companies yet.
but from what I hear, its not really widespread-production-ready anyways.
