Hi

Any way to quickly isolate an object without first selecting in the object manager and go through check and unchecking the small visibility dots?

Solo plug-in. Here's Yoshiaki's "Solo" plug link: http://home7.highway.ne.jp/winter-m/plugin.html

You might want to read the brief thread here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=440699&highlight=solo

Put it into a new layer and solo that layer

Works only with R10.

Itīs R 10 so no problem there.

However it would be more practical if all objects of a particular assembled piece, say a sofa/couch for instance were in the same layer. Else it would require planning of layers with the isolate in mind everytime I build something.

But thanks both.

That's exactly what layers are useful for. When you model you assign your objects to different layers so you can turn their properties on/off as the scene becomes more complex. Modelers should always have layers in mind when they build a scene.

I know.

Guess what Iīm trying to say is itīs maybe a little too much having a layer for each part of the sofa. One for a leg, one for each cushion etc.

Unless you can add sort of a sublayer within the layer. I havenīt fully explored 10 though.

But all in all it works fine of course.

I use layers with cad and having layers in C4D, and other such features, means I will be modeling more in C4D. Only, too bad it was not added to R9. R10 in 2007? Yes.

Solo? Click on the object and then click Solo green – the object is isolated. Solo is simply an on/off switch for an object or a component of an object. When done, click Solo black and everything reappears.

BTW, happy holidays and the best in 2007!

You can choose to go the "Low Tech" way and copy the sofa/model
to a new file and call it: "sofa" construction. You then have it totally
isolated and saved in another file from the scene file. As long as you don't
change it's position, it will always copy/paste into same spot in both files.

really the best advice given to you is to use Solo.
I use it easily a few hundred times a day.
Layers are good for organising complex scenes, however they are too slow when you just want to isolate some objects to work on, as this would require placing them in a new layer etc etc... Solo works with just one click, especially if you assign a shortcut.
Probably the most indispensable plugin for me

Isolating in a new scene is not a practical solution, it is much too tedious

Dito..

You know, its extraordinary that after all these years, the much needed functionality and usefulness of the Solo plugin has never actually been implemented within the C4D application itself. The new layer system, although a welcome addition to C4D requires a rather planned and tedious approach i.e. by pre-assigning and organizing objects to layers to be of any real use.

Solo doesn't and that's the beauty of it.
If you're used to working in a creative, fluid and maybe somewhat unplanned manner and you want to quickly isolate an object from interfering scene clutter, there's really no match for Solo at the moment.

And now Paul works for Maxon. Maybe the native app will sprout this functionality soon.

@Jesp - definitely use the Solo plug-in like the others have recommended. That'll give you exactly the functionality you desire.
