Hi every one merry xmas,

Stuck on these following areas,

Sea i want a stormy translucent sea. I want the surface of the alien vessel to have specular reflections similar to that of a crab. How do i blend the oil rig photo references in so it looks like it belongs there. The sky is not a problem that can be sorted. I could put a fog in and that it is too easy.

If there is any one out there that can help please please write back.

I have had this vision in my head for years and would like it to the best i can do it.

Hi richard, this is an interesting idea, but execution is far from being a matte painting, I believe than this is more of an illustration, the mixture of elements is a little confusiong for a matte painting technique I will tell you why

first of all matte painting is either a complete or parcial enviroment created out of nothing at all, using different elements such as 3D , photos, 2d painting ( just for details or little things )

this is because the point of a matte painting is to be photoreal and blend completly seamless with the background plate or source

I suggest you start over, look for a seascape real photo, and replace your elements in that photo, trying to achieve a realistic look with a painted sea is going to be pretty hard and will always look sketchy, with a real waves photos or seascape you can use another waves photos and try to paint ( with cloning tool , selection tool et.)

also the depth is not so good, I can't tell wich plataform is closer. the linear perspective and aereal perspective need improvement

Cheers Jaime and Kutkin, Back to the drawing board, I will treat this as a concept illustration for now. However the points raised have concerned me and I will endeavour to correct them. I am glad you both approve the concept of the idea, even thought the execution is lacking. Bit more research needed then. I have put a revised concept on my portfolio before your replies were recieved.

Still WIP, Jaime I know the sea in the foreground is not right I am determined to paint rather than use photo reference. Where am i going wrong? Really fed up now but determined to finish this.

Howdy, just a quick comment, i think the lighting in the first was stronger than the most recent, too dark.

Yeah, don't fall into the trap of just darkening everything.

Oh, one thing you said--"I am determined to paint rather than use photo reference." Painting doesn't mean you can't use photo reference. Reference is just material that you refer to while you're painting. I agree that it's a better idea to not just slap a bunch of photos together and call it painting--but don't be afraid to refer to photos to help you understand the way things look.

The perspective needs a lot of work here. That's a difficult thing about using photos in matte paintings. Rarely will you find photos that perfectly match the perspective you want. So...why use photos for now? Don't worry about photorealism. Just try to create a convincing illustration. Paint the oil rigs from scratch, using reference. You'll be able to control the perspective and integrate them a lot better into the rest of the piece.

I think any process by which you create a matte painting be it paint or photo composition is a simple means to an end, and the end product of any matte should be 100% photo realism or as close as. Though that said i know earlier you said this was now an illustrative project. The way i see it if you have an idea in mind, use any and all means to communicate that idea.

I have been interested in doing a quatermass and the pit matte for a couple of years, which is why i am in my dark phase at the moment. I am currently working on WWII scene at the moment, I am trying to put together a range of techniques. On the WWII matte I am teaching myself textures and brushes. The alien rescue matte I think deserves better treatment. The image i have posted will stand up as purely conceptive art. I want to learn to paint as this is my tenth painting done in photoshop, i dont know if it is good progress prehaps you guys may have an opinion wether I have a spark. I can create imagery with photos alone, but i feel like i have not learnt anything. I am over the moon that you guys are helping me with this. I know I am behind the curve technically. My head is full of ideas that need unleshing on the world. I am hopeless with perspective, with a normal sketchpad the perspective is easy to draw, but i find using the Hewlett packard Tablet (hunk of junk) difficult to sketch with as it only has two pressure sensitivitys on /off.

I have set myself a challenge same scene but a day and night version, watch this space.
