This has been making the rounds over at digg.com's Technology site:

DAVID is a freeware software for laser range scanning. All you need is a PC, a camera (e.g. a webcam), a background corner, and a laser which projects a line onto the object you want to scan. So everyone can use it to scan objects without high costs; this is the big advantage over commercial solutions which are rather expensive.
It's a 3D scanning solution using a corner, a camera/webcam, and a laser to scan in an object digitally, and it's FREEWARE! I haven't tested it out yet (at work currently), but if the screenshots are any indication, this could become my new favorite toy!
Has anyone used this yet? I wonder if it can output a mesh directly to Maya? How awesome would it be to be able to scan in hi-res objects right at home to make normal maps with? Better yet, I wonder how high the resolution can be (I'm assuming it depends on how many passes you make with the laser)?
