Hello my fellow cg artists... im going to jump a bit of the personal work subject, I actually wanted to share this amazing piece of work created by method studios. I am currently working at this studio but was not there when this piece was created. I just wanted to share a comercial that is so creative and one of the best cg commercials ive seen. I hope you guys enjoy....

That is stunning...I love how the visuals are able to feel curious and beautiful despite some of the "plants", sometimes, threatening forms (garden sheers and what not)...The mixture of organic and mechanical elements, though stylized feel completely seemless and inline with the look and feel of the commercial.

I'd love to see how the concept came to fruition from the start or if there are more commercials planned for a series of communications...This is cool stuff.

this is great piece! it is a pretty interesting take on a similar piece by First Ave. Machine. the lighting and shading are what do it for me---they do feel like they belong!

I also love the play with scale...keeps you guessing until the reveal---

nice work!

Beautiful, no doubt about it. Just one question, are those 3D elements mixed with real life shots ? If you tell me it's all 3D then I think I'll go out of my mind...

thanks for the replies, i will be showing your comments to my fellow co workers that worked on this project and im sure they will grately appreciate it very much.

DDman:
pretty much all the main elements where cg composited of cours into a real life environment. most of any elements created in film and commercial always have compositing.

again, thanks for the comments..

Very cool ad indeed! Yeah, I love the shears and drills, and I laughed when push and riding lawnmowers revved up out of the flowers. Inspiring stuff!

Some of it reminds me of a compositing reel I saw, where the artist placed eyes on all kinds of plants and trees with the appropriate textures. I think it's on YouTube somewhere....

Fantastic. Mechanical tools forming organic plants. Beautiful juxtaposition. :)

(I just used juxtaposition in something other than a college essay. I'm astounded.)

nice job. too bad that it reminds me so much of the "sixes last" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmvwN1G08zc) video, so it's loosing some of it's originality.

I can't quite understand why so little comments have been made about this video.
It's really great - well executed, well designed, very nice concept IMO, great job!

Could you let us in on which of the animals are 3D and which aren't?

Great compositing and 3d. But lacks any origanality to me as well. Saw it when it was done by 1st Avenue Machine a couple of times. Great work on the part of the team that worked on it though.

Thanks everybody for the comments on this piece. It was really fun to work on and it's cool to see so many nice things being said about. If you have any more questions, fire away, I would be happy to answer them.

PureMoxi - I don't know of any sequels to this commercial or campaign. But who knows:)

dutchtilt - yeah, the First Ave piece was a good inspiration, but I feel that ultimately we did our own thing.

DDMan - the backgrounds and insects were shot practically but all the plants themselves are CG, there was some enhancing of some practical elements but not a lot.

RobertoOrtiz - One of these days soon I'll sit down and get some of my co-workers to join me in posting some more on our process.

Lua - Thanks, check methodstudios.com often, we post everything we do and update pretty often. We've got some kickass superbowl spots coming soon, can't say anymore :)

TAVO - we used Maya for modeling and animation, Mental Ray for rendering.

andyburm - yes Halon did some great initial work. They are a pre-viz company and did the pre-viz for this commercial, It gave us a running start on making the finished version for sure.

FRENZIEDmind - yes it has aired, it was more in spring time, it aired less then I thouht it would,m but I'm not surprised. It's very artsy for the typical sears ad.

APD-Jack - what specifically do you want to know?

Luciddream79 - it's true that first Ave's work was amazing and a reference of ours, but "lacks any orginiality" is kind of harsh. The filming technique was similar but our plants were significantly different.

Laters,
Chris
