View Full Version : Non-photo Render: Wind
David Coombes 02-16-2003, 09:03 PM Hi,
Breaking away from the photo-realistic scene I wanted to create an artistic renderer for my entry to the RealSoft bimonthly image competition. The attached is produced in RealSoft v4.5. The figures are SDS models mapped to skeletons, making the whole thing animatable.
The tree's a little out due to my concentrating so much on getting the non-real render as I wanted and I ran out of time to tidy it up. My fault for starting so late!

That looks like something that could be in a book. A lot differnt from what we use to see on Cgt

Excellent.
I'm really taking to this non-photorealistic genere. It's a welcome break of originality - where in non-photorealism you have so many (like infiniate) styles to build up and be creative on where essentially in photorealisitc stuff, there is just the one 'style'. Effectively photorealsitic work is more of a 'craft' where what we have here is art.
I love the style you've worked on, it's a brilliant take on non-photorealism. The effect of wind is nice and classic too, and will really take of with an animation, as you say its been done so its possible. Do you remember some Ariel washing powder adverts on TV (in UK as you are) a while back.. i think it was them. Allthough not at all 3d, that had an excellent 'rough sketchy' wind animation form that might be worth a look. anyway.
Be nice to see more of your stuff.. + I'd be interested in the result of the competition too, good luck.!.

A lot of my experiments are in non-photoreal, taking a more artsy approach. It can be alot of fun! I don't recall the Ariel advert but when I created Wind I had a slight influence by the sand-men from Sesame Street; you know the two guy silhouettes made of stop-frame sand.
Oh, and I won the competition

I too don't see a godly appeal in photo-realism. My plans are simply to render normally, but to trace over the final image in Corel Painter. I wonder how that'll go on only 512 RAM...
*** glares at Corel and wishes they knew how moronic they are for having too many memory bugs in their Painter ***

Hi,
Finally got that large "render". I had major trouble producing something that large, asking the RealSoft users to help out. Turns out that the post-processing aspect of the image is very troublesome at hi-res due to huge memory consumption.
Anyway, here's a link to a 1600x1200 image.

Hope you like it. Don't know about an anim at present. We'll see...
