Title: Mhiet'e
Name: Lauren Cannon
Country: United States
Software: Photoshop

Mhiet'e of the Dhuriiehm.

Just a character study, really, but I needed something to help de-stress from college finals. I tried to balance the simplicity of the portrait by working very hard on the details and lighting. Mhiet'e is one of my most interesting looking characters. I had a lot of fun playing with her design. She has a very mysterious, quiet countenance that goes deeper than her outward look, so I tried to capture that in her face.

My productivity has been lacking because of schoolwork, but now I have a month off between semesters. I'm going to do my best to make good use of it, so expect more paintings very soon! :]

Photoshop 7.0. Feedback appreciated! Thanks for looking.

Beautiful work. The face - and that eye - are hauntingly creepy (in a good way.)
Enjoy your holiday break!

walrus: Thank you! The good kind of creepy is my favorite thing to depict. :D Love your work, by the way!

sokolova: Thank you very much. :)

Samuraikuroi: I've been told in the past that my lighting needed more work, so I'm glad I did a good job in this picture. Thanks!

Bell7: Thank you!

I want a bird in my hair! Awsomely creepy concept. I find her boobs a bit off-kilter, most especially that front one. Maybe it's the highlight, in slightly the wrong place? And I think the knot of her skirt could use just a tad more developement. But overall....tribal. Modern. Evocative. Bravo!

You just can't stop improving, can you? First off, great color scheme. A bit monochrome, Renaissance like, very appealing; We don't really see that in digital art these days, so this is always welcome. The textures in the background are excellent, very well done and appealing, w/o taking away from the figure. Figure's anatomy looks great, although I'd like to see you push those skin tones a bit more. Overall, a well painted solid piece, 4 stars well deserved.

Vishy P: Thank you! :)

Michael: Yeah, I think it's my best technical piece so far. Thanks for the comment!

CGriffin: Thanks for the comment and critiques! I think you're right about her boobs. And the knot... well, I painted the skirt last and I was getting bored with it, hahah. Bad me. :D

slickgreekgeo: Hehehe. :D Thanks, George. I've been attracted to subtle color schemes lately. Thanks for the crit on the skin tones. I still have trouble with those.

Madalaine: Thanks so much, dear!

Fish-KAart: Thank you :]

NR43: Yes, the tattooed script has a meaning. I'm a loser and created my own language and alphabet.

Leonardo Lin: It's okay if you don't like it. :) Thank you for the critique about the proportion.

Miezis: Hahah, I suppose it is! Thanks for the comment.

Blessing: Thank you!

BGHart: Thanks Britta! The animal on her head is actually just a bird wing stuck under her head scarf.

PapaNinja: Thank you :)

Lauren,

That's beautiful :) I totally adore her design - kind of tribal, primal yet sublime, feminine and just overally mysterious. What I like the most is her head-dress and the neckpiece (beautiful shadows on that one). And that eye is just so captivating! Great work all around. 5 stars well deserved.

Btw, I have a question to you: I noticed you work in rather desaturated colours: is that intentional, in the meaning you just don't like saturated, intense shades, or it's a subconcious process? Just being curious, cause it's all still looking great =)

Hey Marta! Thanks so much for the lovely comment. Having just been blown away by your latest piece, it's extra meaningful.

The colors... I prefer neutral tones over brighter ones, but I also just have a very hard time using color. My earliest digital stuff was all washed out and gray. Even now my work often turns out more desaturated than I wanted. Color's something I've always struggled with... I doubt I'll ever master it. But it's good to know that people like my color themes in spite of it all. :)

I too love the way you deal with neutral tones. It would be interesting to see a piece with bolder colours from you. Although I completely relate to finding colour dificiult to work with! Especially when it comes to dramatic lighting. It's really frustrating trying to get the right balance.

Perhaps this is something for us to look forward to seeing in the future? ;) (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)

Keep up the wonderful work!

Simply Amazing! This image is superb. I usually pass over this kind of stuff. It always looks like someone is trying to imitate Linda Bergkvist**. Nothing against that kind of work, but it seems that everyone is imitating that style lately. You have taken that style and worked it into something all your own. This piece is alive with texture and detail. I can't wait to look at the rest of your portfolio.

Ah, Brady....ye olde 'comparison to Linda' thing. Jeeze, you can't attempt anything photorealistic these days without being compared to her. I think there's more of a Brom vibe, personally. No doubt, Linda is the top of the food chain, in realistic digital fantasy. It's hard not to learn from her fabulous techniques. But that's kinda like saying every impressionist is just knocking off Monet.

I really dig the desaturated colors, btw. I tend towards that myself, but then always tweak it intense at the last moment. And then regret it. It's so easy to be dazzled by all the purdy colors....like a kid in a candy store.... ;)

rubenmontecinos: Thank you :)

Madalaine: You're right... I wish I could use brighter colors, and I want to try to paint something a bit bolder sometime in the future. I've figured out my technique, so now it's time to experiment with other things so I don't shut myself into a box. Thanks again. :]

bradyscott: Thank you very much. I think that it's impossible for any digital painter dealing with realism to not be likened to Linda (the same happens with Dali and surrealism). I'm delighted you found this painting to be something special. :) Thank you for the comment!

CGriffin: Heheh, ah, it doesn't bother me anymore. It's always going to happen--we're just similar people and it carries through our paintings. I've know her since I was fifteen, as both an artist and a friend... she's the one who got me interested in digital painting, so of course she's been a huge inspiration to me. But I've never intentionally tried to copy her... I respect her too much to ever do that. And at this point, I'm confident that my style is my own. People are going to see similairites between our work, but I know I'm not copying her and she knows it too, so that's good enough for me. :) And yes... I do love Brom's work. His colors and weird fetishy characters delight me. :D

Seems we have opposite problems... I always end up popping the brightness and contrast on my paintings because they're too dull, and even then they end up looking destaurated!
