There are several things that I hate about painting textures. One of the bigger problems I have is subtle gradient changes when painting in greyscale. I really hate it when I think I have a decent bump map going, only to see problems spots when I slap it on a model and see the bad spots that I thought were good. Know what I mean?
To help me see the gradients better, thus some of the problem spots, I've taken to painting bump maps in PS with a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer.
Start a Grad-Map Ad-Layer.
Set it to Spectrum.
Back to the bump layer and paint away.
Turn off the Grad-Map Ad-Layer.
Save the bump.
Should work fine with other types of greyscale maps, but bump maps are the only ones that really give me problems.
(Another good tip is to test a bump map with Filter > Render > Lighting Effects.)
Attached is a quick-n-sleazy example.
