View Full Version : Blowing Cloth
MKess007 02-16-2003, 05:07 PM I been trying to create a blowing cloth for quite some time now. I made a simple square cloth and added wind and gravity, but Im not sure if I attached it correctly to the cloth. When I simulate it the clothe just floats staight up or down very slowly. I also set transform constrains on the top of the cloth before i added the wind and gravity.
If you cant completely understand what I did but know how to do that with Maya cloth could you explain it from step one or something.

Try faking it with Dynamics...
make the geometry that you want to use as the cloth.
make it a softbody.
add springs, wierframe draw method.
Add gravity. Use dynamic relationship editor to link the field to the springs.
add the air feild. and link like above.
**next step it theoretical**
select the spring points at the top of the cloth, and create a cluster deformer. it will act like a point constrain. You might not be able to isolate individual spring points, bar useing per spring attributs with an array to controll the dynamic effect on the springs.
then tweek the dampening and stiffness of the springs, TIP higher dampening and low stiffness will amplify any movements in the cloth's simulation, like it was made out of rubber.
run simulation and tweak!!!
the other suggestion i have is to create an object that interacts with the cloth, and position it over the top most row of cloth points/ verts(so all the top verts are inside of the geometry), use the geometry as a passive rigid body not linked to the gravity field(this will act like a constrain) or try using a constrain, i dunno if it'll work.
then add gravity and air.
make sure you link the dynamics to the cloth.
tweek attrib for desired results.
I'v never had much luck with cloth, short of it looking great with default settings. I have always use dynamics of had a buddy fix cloth issues. I like dynamics cause once you figure out what the attribs do you can simulate just about anything. For clothing, though, using maya cloth would be the best and fastest.
any issues you have with "jitter" or ugly movements you can solve by baking the simulation and editing the resulting trans curves in the graph editor.
If i didnt help much then i hope i gave you some new ideas to try out:)
good-a ruck!

Fields are not attached to objects in the same way that they are linked with rigid bodies. I know that looking at the manual is not the favorite thing to do for many people, but there is a page there that explains exactly how to do it in a few short steps.
If you have Maya installed on the same computer you are using right now, and if it's installed in the default folder, then this link will work:
Here (file://C:\Program%20Files\AliasWavefront\Maya4.5\docs\en_US\html\UserGuide\Cloth\Animating13.html)
Otherwise, look in the Maya Manuals on the section for 'Cloth', inside it look for 'Animating Cloth' and then 'Connecting Dynamic Fields to your Cloth'.
Hope this helps :)
