I've recently begun rigging a nurbs patch model character using a poly wrap deformer and everything seems to be working ok until I got to the head where the head poly wrap gets confused between the upper and lower lips when transferring the deformations from the wrap to the nurbs patch model - Is there a quick was to get around this without starting the rigging and weighting the model from scratch

I have run in to this problem as well. I don't think there's an easy way to get around it. But one thing you can do is open the mouth before you create the wrap object, then wrap deform with the mouth already open and then return to the bind pose. I haven't tried it but the idea is solid I think.

This is not a bad problem. Its a common problem with using wrap deformer where different part of the surface are close to each other. Thats why wrap deformer comes with its own influence object. So all you need to do is create specific influence objects for both the upper and lower lips seperately. Then tell the wrap deformer to use these influence object for those areas (note that its the influence object under wrap deformer, not the one in smooth bind!). After this, your lips should only be influenced by the seperate influence object and hence not have the sticky lips problem.

If you are still confused, read the docs, it should talk about this as well.
