This concept came to me first through using a pose I'd sketched a while back that had yet been unused. Eventually, after considering the pose itself, a throne materialized onto paper. Then I used a gothic figurine I have to create the heads which hold the throne upward.

I remember wanting to use really strange animals in one of my drawings, and of all the mythical ones I couldn't decide on, I chose a factual one that no longer exists...as far as is known. I had to use old photographs and other artists' renderings of the tazmanian tiger to get it to look decent.

After the animals were drawn in, I finished off the base with roots/veins spreading from the center.

Now, it's almost as if the character is some guardian of another realm watching over the beasts humankind once destroyed, a protector of that which belonged on Earth long before humans.

Pencil drawing scanned in and cleaned up in PS6.

A start of the BG, unusual of me to start with the bg instead of characters.

As always, suggestions are always appreciated.

Oooh, I LOVE it! The idea of a guardian of the extinct is really great. I can't wait to see how this turns out. ^^!

I've left the bg as is for now, and did most of the work on the throne. I might tweak it more later.

Before I left to visit family out of town for xmas, I had finished the two lion heads with collors that sort of took on a bronze look. When I got back, I worked on the veins/roots and their shading. I still have to add the same bronze look to them. I haven't yet decided how the ground and boulders in the bg will look, but it might also be done in warm colors.

Did some color adjusting on the lion heads & throne and painted in the steps and rocks in the bg. Decided to give the surroundings a more greenish tint since the animals' colors would have blended in too much. Still not sure what to do with the overall bg, but it will come to me in time.

Okay, finally got the ground down with base colors, and added a texture using the pattern tool on low opacity. Of course then I had to go in with the clone tool to add variation in the texture. I like the way it looks so far, and I might add this effect to the rocks and lionheads.
Another note on the BG, I think I'd like to paint in some plants/trees like what Kinkade does in his paintings behing the chair to fill in the mpty space with vivid color. Well, I guess we'll see how that goes.

While I've been working on this piece, I've also been working on another. As you can probably tell, most of my work is done with linework, and I've been wanting to try to do the same work but with more realism without such noticeable lines. So either I learn to draw with much thinner lines, or paint without them at all. For this one, I've been using a line drawing as a guide, and painting in as much detail as possible. This is a fairy BTW, but I haven't yet painted in her wings yet. Let me know how it looks so far.

I added textures to he rocks and gargoyles. You might notice a difference in the gargoyles' texture and the rocks.

I've begun work on the foilage and plants on the left using refs of tropical gardens. I realize more detail wil have to be painted in to really make the plants feel real, but for now I'm just getting everything in where I want it. The other side will be similar, but with more variation in placement of plant types.

More details added, a vase or two will be painted and filled with other plants. I made more color adjustments to better blend the foilage in to the color scheme.

More vases have been added as you can see, along with different flowers. I also did a purple tree in the bg, which cam out to my liking, so I may add more of that to the left side. I know that alot of what is on the right is getting cluttered, so I'm trying to figure how to tone it down.

the flowers aren't what I was expecting, but it definitely looks great.
Some of the potted plants in the back seem like they're a bit high and close in comparison to the girl, but the look might change as it goes on, just something I noticed that I thought I'd point out.
definitely continue to watch this, keep up the good work.

I see what you mean about the pots. I might take them out and replace with flower beds like I'm doing on the right. The flowers were painted in a more sketchy style like some of the paintings I've used as refs, so I like that look.

Looks good :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I wouldn't worry to much about the right being cluttered. once you put some stuff on her left and color her she'll go back to being the focus of the picture.

Very nice looking so far! I really like the style you've used for the plants, I think they're great! Would make a terribly handsome desktop image if you'd make an image with just that alone, so I'm curious as to how you're going to draw the main character.

As for cluthering... you could always remove some contrast from the backdrop by applying a bit of flat colour over it, but I think the image can carry the details.

Thanx everyone for compliments and critique! I've done more again, this time adding a third tree to the left, almost bonzai looking in a way, and because of the trees' stlye the image is taking on a more asian feel. Funny how when something is started it begins taking on a life of its own. I also toned down the frontal plants to blend them in easier as to not distract the eye so much.
Thanx again!

Alot of major changes have been made, because i wasn't satisfied with the bg. I decided on waterfalls as a backdrop since it fits with the tropical theme, and would be fairly even in detail. The thing that had bothered me was that I couldn't get the plants on the right to look the same as those on the left, so here I am. I also made color adjustments to the throne and lion/gargoyles, and boulders to better fit the color scheme. I ended up taking alot of the flowers on the left out too. Here it is so far. ~Angela

Made more color/hue/saturation adjustments, and finished up the detail on the rocks on the right. Finally finished painting in the waterfall, and added mist in the back. Also toned down the flowers. I may add more mist on the other side, and maybe some fireflies for effect over the water. Then, FINALLY, I be able to tackly the characters in the painting. Like I said before, doing the bg first is not usual practice for me, but I'm finding that I solve alot of problems before painting the actual character first.

I love the changes you've done and the foliage still looks great.

I have a little critique for you, on the lower half of the background you have waterfalls, giving the background a sense that it starts very far away, but on the top half of the background you have fairly big trees that looked like they're placed alot closer, just seems to be two clashing design elements.
Just thought I'd point out what I saw. Can't wait to see you start working on the girl. =)

You think maybe blurring the trees a bit might help?

aldog
01-25-2007, 05:46 PM
umm, it's hard to say. If you blurred them right now, it might not look so good, right now. But once you have the girl drawn it it could change that.
I would suggest drawing the trees very tiny, with a brush about the size of the shrubs you have right next to her elbow that's resting on the chair, going all the way back. Then you'll have the top 1/3 of the background empty, which might not be what you're going for, but you could always put in a night sky.
It's weird because the big trees on the right side of the picture seem to fit,

Shiki

Okay, I blurred them a bit, and darkened the trees appearance to lessen the closeness of their look. Also added the base color for the tazmanian tigers.

Started the guardian woman, and in step with the tazmanian tiger theme, I actually decided to make her complexion a bit similar to aboriginal people. Maybe a little lighter in shade, but it should look decent. Her dark hair will also be given a green-blue shine to it. Hopefully, the next post on this will be a finished image.~Angela

Pretty much done with the final character, and yes she is probably alot lighter skinned than most aboriginals, but for the sake of the image she could technically be from some sort of tribe. I'm going to add some shine to her clothing and then it should be finished.~Angela

This piece is pretty much done, but I'm wondering now if I should do some more color adjustments on the gargolyes to make them another more fitting coloration to the composition. Any thoughts?~Angela

The final looks great khimido, her skin might not be as dark, but it looks great, it needed to be a bit brighter than what an aboriginies (sp?) skin would be in order to pop out in the image. The trees in the back look great, they seem like they're right where they're supposed to be. I'm pretty sure I've complimented everything that looks good in here in previous posts, so just, good job!
