I had a trailer thread here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=415591 but i wont be able to make it in time so i am switching to the illustration category hoping that i can create something good in time... I am using XSI, Hexagon and Lightwave to pull the whole entry together..
This is Olmy so far... I used poly by poly techinique on Olmy and modelled him in XSI trying to keep a boxy feeling in him (especially the head)... Hope you like it..
C&C more than welcome...

Hey George!
I've had a look in your trailer thread yesterday and already thought that it's about time for an update:scream: ...though I'm sorry that you've not the time to finish the trailer entry it's great to discover your models in the illustration section now:) !
I've already told you that I really like your Frant design and now it's the same for Olmy, solid modeling:thumbsup: ! I'm eager to see the next updates and especially curious to discover your scene concept!
Have a nice day!

Sabrina: yeah.... it was about time i put my lazy ass to work and updated at least a challenge thread even if it means no sleep :scream:.... Glad you like it... What do you think of the Frant's legs now? I changed them singe the last time you saw this...
Arturo: thank you very much for your comments... Yeah, the legs could be a little smaller but i wanted a kind of giant feeling in it... It is descibed as a very tall creature in the book (not that i am following the book's description or anything on him but i liked the idea of having him kind of tower over Patricia and Olmy...
As far as the scene concept is concearned, the image will be about the time when the russian invade the Stone and The Frant and Olmy "capture" Patricia... I found it quite an emotional piece in the book...
Have fun and thank you once again for your comments... I will post a rough 3d concept of the final image in a little while...

Hi, really nice character, and I feel different then Arturo about the legs, and personally I think they can even be a bit longer to bring in some more the giant feeling you were talking about.
Good luck mate!!!

Nice modeling! Frant is a little scary, but it's a matter of taste :) .
Good luck, and welcome to the Illustration challenge!

First of all thank you extremely much for your kind words and your opinions...
Sasha: My girlfriend found it scary too... I on the other hand thought it was cute... Its really strange how everyone translates a picture mentally...
Remko: Basically that is how i had thought of the scene in the first place... Glad you like it...
Now on with the challenge... This is the general idea for my concept.... had to make something quick and dirty at work to explain it didn't have access to a pc loaded with any 3d program today so i downloaded the mod tool and made a quick sketch to portray my idea...
I am thinking something like this with the following changes: The Frant will be holding Patricia's shoulder and Olmy would invite her (probably a gesture or symbol) to follow him... She will have a worried expression on her face... Also, the camera will probably go lower to portray the height of the chamber...
I am working on Olmys clothes right now but they give me a hard time... Lightwave's cloth is not the best in the market but it will have to do... I just have to figure out a way to avoid cloth penetrating the body mesh without looking like it is floating... I hope i will remember to take my files with me tommorow to show some progress...
Hope you like the concept...
Have fun...

First of all a happy new year to everyone...
Yep... not dead (yet) even though i am sick and i have a ton of work to do... I am still trying to get this challenge finished... I hope you like Olmy and his pose... For some weird reason i think he looks better without shoes...
I know he looks kind of 70's but i think i like the way he looks... will stick to it and see if i have time for improvements after i am done with preparing all the other elements in the scene...
I am currently working on Patricia and the Big Russian Ships but i am not yet satisfied with what i have so i will tweak and probably post tomorrow or the day after...
Other stuff to create are the terrain and atmosphere...
Hope you like it...
Have fun,

Hey George!
First of all: Happy New Year to you!
Though your concept sketch is not easy to read at the first look I like the idea behind it and I can well imagine that it works great:) . And so amazing to discover your Olmy, you've done a good job with his clothes, I think his retro style fit's perfectly in the scene:thumbsup: ! Now I just hope you've time enough to develop the other scene elements, a race against the time and I cross my fingers for you! Go, go, go George!:bounce: :bounce:
-sabrina
Hi George,
That's a nice Olmy :). And the fact that he is looking better without shoes fits perfectly well to the books descriptions of society he belongs to: if I remember right, they didn't use any shoes.
I like his clothing design. The cloth seams to have too much of the highlight and looks more like plastic, but may be that's the meaning because we don't know how the cloth from the future is suppose to look. Are you planing to work a bit more on shading?
Pose looks good in these three camera angles - easy to understand, readable siluet.
Good work! I hope you will finish it.
And Happy New Year!

Sabrina and Sasha thank you very much for your comments and encouragement... glad you like it...
Sasha: I consider Olmy "complete" for the moment since i have to work in other elements of the scene... If i have time i will revisit him and shade him better but i really doubt it since i dont have that much time left...
this is the particia model so far... hope you like it... I love the way the body is turning out but i am not so sure about the face... gotta rush and make it to the deadline... Working on the ship too but its going slow since most of my effort is concentrated on patricia for now...

Just posing the characters... I like patricia's and olmy's pose but i am not sure about the frant who is pursuing patricia ans loosing balance... I want your opinion on this... The characters will be limited to that part of the composition, the rest taken up by terrain, clouds and the russian ships...
Thank you in advance for any comments...

Hey George,
oh, you've been really busy now, Patricia is already finished...she's not really meeting my imagination of the girl described in the book, but hey, good modeling job for the limited time you had:) ...though I like your Olmy much more...The posing of Olmy and Patricia is good for the situation you want to show, but if you want to leave the Frant this way you should rig his feet, atm this looks a little off...(or put his feet on the ground...).
I'm curious now to discover the environment!:bounce:

Thanks for stopping by Sabrina... Yeah... I know i strayed from the book... I have been since the beggining of the challenge... I tried giving Patricia black hair and more conservative look but it just didn't work for me so i went with this style and i am quite satisfied by it (considering the time i created it in... it does fly like the wind)... As for the Frant, I will change his pose if my pc lets me:sad:... it keeps crashing on me... Dont really know what is wrong...
Thank you very very much for your suggestion:love:... I have completed the terrain, put some very low poly buildings to show a kind of city and added the tubelight but since the scene crashes all the time, I wasn't able to render it out yet.. willl try again this afternoon as well as model the rest of the Russian ship...
Once again, thanks for the suggestion... I will try to pose him more naturally:)...

Hi, icedeyes, looking good so far! I especially like your outfit for Olmy, it feels very appropriate. As for their poses, I like Olmy's too. Will you be doing anything more with his facial pose? Some expression to back up his gesturing pose?
I agree with Sabrina that it would help the Frant to have his foot planted on the floor. The Frant's screen-left arm (his right arm) seems a bit awkward, in that his elbow is raised but he's holding Patricia's arm underhanded: If a human were holding someone's arm underhanded, the elbow would be down... but then, we're not Frants! But because we're all humans, that may be why that positioning feels uncomfortable.
As for Patricia, what is she looking at? She'snot facing forwards towards the direction she's running in, but she's not facing the Frant grabbing her. In splitting the difference, it's now unclear what her face is doing. I'd suggest committing to one or the other. I think it would be really natural to have her head turned more, looking at this alien who's just grabbed her arm... maybe even with a look of fear or surprise on her face. But forward would work too... maybe even with a look of fear or surprise on her face! :)
good luck!

Hey mike... First of all, thank you for your comments... they are really helpful...
Glad you like Olmy... I will change Patricia's pose as well as the Frant's before i go on to model the Russian Ship...
On a further notice, Patricia is looking forward but her eyes are tilting to the left (towards the Frant) but this resolution is too low to show that so i will try to make it more clear by changing the pose... this was a very helpful comment since i have been staring at this so long, i cant really see what is problematic by myself....
I will post as soon as i complete the changes and manage to render out something (the renderer keeps crashing on me so i will try to transfer my objects to a new scene)...

LostPen: I know the composition is not the best, i am trying something different now but render times are very steep...
This is the scene so far... Hope you all like it... Changed the pose of both the Frant and Patricia... I also got rid of Patricia's hair because they were causing a mesh and destoyed some renders (that take a really long time)... I will add hair on her head in Post... I also know there is too much DOF but i rendered overnight (and some of the day) so i wasn't able to see the progress and dont have time for another test render with the time at hand... not unless i make some other changes first...

Hey George,
the posing is better now, especially for the Frant with the feet more on the ground!
As you've mentioned yourself the background is not really visible, definitely too much DOF...before you're not sure of your final composition I wouldn't render the DOF at all, this maybe a reason for your long rendertimes. Sad too here that your PC still crashes...perhaps you can render foreground and background seperately? This way you can also add your DOF-effect in post...
And I'm not sure about the latest update, with this angel I seriously begin to worry about Patricia's bust size:scream: ...and I also think the previous update is better to read, so perhaps something in the middle of the both views...
But your scene is really coming together now, I'm looking forward to the next update!:)

Hey Sabrina... Yeah... Patricia had plastic surgery due to a change in the field of view of the camera :scream:... I widened the angle to make the room look longer... I will probably render foreground and background elements seperatelly as you suggested and see how i can go from thereon... I will also try a different angle on this once again (cant seem to get it right... dont know why...)...
The news are that my pc finally gave out yesterday.... After a power surge, it couldn't boot normally so i had to format it and all but i kept the scenes in an external drive so it wont be a problem... i am going to reinstall everything today so i can keep going...
Once again, thank you for your comments

Thank you very much for your comments neville....
The only thing i consider myself confident at is modelling... I have been modelling characters for a little while now... But I have never made a woman before (whole body i mean) and i think it shows (analogies and maybe some strange features)...
For some reason in all my 3d related jobs ever i was asked to create men and never had a chance to tackle modelling a female character...
As you can see, i pretty much suck at texturing, cameras and shading but i am working on it and try not to give up...
I will add a flare and maybe more effects in post just as soon as i manage to render this out as a final...
