Here is a little Maya 7 project i put together. I did it mostly as a test to see how well maya 7's normals generation is compared to maya 6.5.

To answer the question it's much better. Comments are of course welcome.

Also...my next project is going to be a few characters at a SONY PSP level. So anyone know polycounts or texture limits for the psp? Averages are good.

looks awesome! You said you have used normal maps with maya 6.5? I cant find a plug in to get my normals to work in 6.5 could you maybe point me in the right direction?

in the plugins section of maya 6.5 make sure "transfersurfaces" is on.

then under lighting is "transfer surfaces"

It's pretty easy, select High and low and transfer.

7.0 is MUCH better though. I had lots of errors with 6's normals

looks pretty good. i think you should have maybe added some of the face details to the normal map though. or if you did, sharpen them a bit more as it gets a bit muddled in there.
