Last week, CGSociety visited Jean Bolte, the viewpainter for the dragon in 'Eragon'.

Bolte, who had covered the surface of the dragon in Eragon with painted textures, was settling in for another feature, but took the time to chat with Barbara Robertson.

Click the image, read the story and feel free to comment.

interesting how she referenced a close up of Meg Ryan's eyes from 'Inner Space'...

also very cool to see Jean's personal paintings... for some reason its good to know working artists still like painting from imagination for fun

somehow i was under the impression that viewpaint is actually an ILM inhouse 3D painting system and viewpaint artists are those using it? just wondering because in the article, only photoshop is mentioned.

From my understanding, viewpaint is the inhouse piece of software they use to project the textures onto the 3d model. But the actual painting is done in photoshop or other 2d paint packages.

Ah I was wondering what "viewpainting" actually is...it didnt' really say, from the article it just sounds like she's a texture artist. So it's akin to saying you're a photoshopper? It's just a program, and those that use it are labeled as viewpainters? :D

Yup, although that may sound a little derogatory. The painters at ILM from what I know are really good, so calling them a photoshopperseems like a gross underestimation of their skills :)

I dunno... I think Draco simply owns this dragon, the design is just lame...

Well, while I did like Draco as a model, ya have to give ILM credit for trying to stick to the source. I mean, the Saphira looks like a 3D version of the book illustrations of her.

She often painted the textures with a one-pixel brush.
I can't recall the last time I painted a texture with a one-pixel brush.

If the changed often with only, then I would be floored. I do juggle with one pixels from time to time. ;)

Thanx CG talk for this wonerful artical. when I see the Movie I will make sure to observe all the points which jean says she addressed. Well, I would say Inspiring. very good!

I wish if she could share some of her tips as a texturing artist, or as a view painter. I wonder whats the diffrence between a texturing artist and view painter?

That's the first thing that I thought when I saw this article! Can't believe how many people hated that movie. Hope to see this movie during the holiday season.

The story of the movie was lame. There wasn't a single original story in the entire plot - there was everything mixed in from "Star Wars: A new Hope", "Dragonriders of Pern", "The Return of the Dragonriders" and bits of D&D lore, along with several other concepts and storylines stolen from other movies and/or books.

It was fun to watch, and it was stunningly gorgeous and the dragon was the most beautiful dragon I've ever seen in my life!

But, the plot still sucked.

So this program adds another "moving part" to a pipe line just to do something that ANY other 3d program does. Doesn't ILM use Maya or XSI or some other main stream 3d program now? Don't they have the ability to slap an image onto something?

It sounded more like a BS title to make someone sound important. With that said, she did a great job.

yes.. our sanitation engineer and our paper-based information deployment agent would agree.

Hah, the only reason I went to see this was because I wanted to see the dragon. I had read the original book, and wasn't impressed at all. The inspiration obviously came from Dragon Riders of Pern series and a bit of Star Wars, though at the same time it wasnt surprising-- because wasn't who wrote it rather young? No doubt, I've seen 14 year olds write wonders, but passion wise, I still believe they'd have to grow a bit, so i believe the movie was lacking quite a bit of passion. Which was why-- no one was crying when the impression of Saphira dying had been placed. But of course- I'm not 100% sure if the writer was young, just what i've heard. Been too lazy to do any research.

But the dragon rocks, thanks for the article!

I read the book and I saw the movie and in my opinion second one is a shame about the story, characters and staging. A waste of time and money!
After 30 min. I think about to leave the cinema, so bad it was if you know the books.
The only glory was the Dragon. It's very impressiv and beautiful to see acting in the movie. Thumbs up for ILMs work here but thumbs down for realisation of this movie!

BI can't recall the last time I painted a texture with a one-pixel brush.

I remember painting in my youth giant battle scenes with 10's of knights with one-pixel-at-a-time in MSPaint -- Of course, I'd 'paint' about 3 knights and just duplicate them.

Hey, now that I think about it, that's the first 'CG' I've ever done. Neat.
