Ok guys
I have a fairlty complex model.
I am trying to apply a combustion material to some of the polygons.
I managed to do that in a simple box turned to poly and i cannot get to do it in my complex object. This is what ive done, what am i doing wrong?

1. I select the polygons in question
change their material ID to 3 ( it is my third material, id 2 is successfully in there)
2.I assign a UVW Mapping modifier, Map Channel 3
3. I create a material wiht a material effects channel 3 and assign the material to the model with the faces selectd. The material is accepted and renders ok so far.
4. I assign a combustion bump map, set on map channel 3
5. I paint either on the combustion workspace or the model in max, it works but when i go to render it nothing happens. When I did the same operation on my box (there was only one material assigned instead of my subobject materials) the combustion bumpmap happily translated to the rendering.

I suspect that some of my assignments are unnecessary but the main problem is one of omission perhps, what am i doing wrong!>??? thanx

MAYBE THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THE UVW GIZMOS... I ASSIGNED 2 DIFFERENT ONES, EACH WITH ON A SEPPARATE CHANNEL. ?
BTW i AM PAINTING ON THE RIGHT FRAME, I HAVE BOTH MY COMBUSTION AND MAX AT FRAME 1 FOR CLARITYS SAKE.

MORE ON MY PROBLEM:
is the problem that i should be using a multisubobject material instead of several standard materials... each assigned to selected polys on different material ids Why would it work in simpler polys then?
if this is it, please tell me how to work with this multisubobject mat

i don't really know if that's the problem, but as you already said.. i'd always use the subobject material because you don't have to assign all this mess of modifiers, plus it doesn't clutter the interface so much

just try it..

"because you don't have to assign all this mess of modifiers"
what do you mean. I still want uvw modifiers to place combustion and other textures on my guy!

mh ok, you can still do so with a multi-material...still easier to use
you should just try stuffing your seperate materials into a multi-one, then set up the id's inside that material and just assign it to your model...maybe this already solves the problem
