one way to do it is export the environment to a file(.3ds, .x, .raw, ect...) then with your character file open(in blender) import the evironment file that you exported.

at least thats how i do it. one thing to know though is that it will only save the model(maybe the texture too...i have never exported a textured model) but not the lights or cameras.

if instead you would rather not save it in different files you can use layers and put your character on one layer and your evironment on another untill your ready for them to be together.

to do that go to object mode and(unless your using keypad emulation) hit a number from 1 through 0 on the number bar(not sure what to call it...the numbers on the top of your keyboard) and that will switch you between layers.

and to switch models between layers . go to object mode select the model you want to be switched and hit the 'm' key and it will bring up a window for you to select what layer you want it to be moved to.

hope that helps,

Corky12190.

read up on 'append' and 'library linking' in the blender manual here:
http://download.blender.org/documentation/htmlII/x2059.html

Updates to library linking facility have been made recently and are documented here:
http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Library_Linking.769.0.html

Just a suggestion.

Try grouping your character first before appending.

That way, when you bring your group (your character group), you will have all the materials and textured applied to it already, rather than having to append the mesh first, then append the material and then the textures (too much work).

You don't always have to append the mesh, texture, etc individually. When you append something in Blender, all the linked datablocks come with it, so if you append an Object, it's associated mesh, material, texture, etc comes too. This is why Groups bring everything else in, it's just one step up the chain.

Use Shift + F1 to import elements from a file.
