View Full Version : Simple table cloth
tonare 12-17-2006, 07:07 AM Can someone please help me with a simple table cloth?
I've tried every setting I can think of( no gravity, not bounce...ect..) and something that seems so simple is not as easy as I would of thought.
I'm using a 2 discs, one for the tabletop and one for the cloth and I get a concaved middle and the edge of the table either seeps through no matter how many times I SD it, or the cloth crawls back up around the edge leaving terrible looking waves.
Any help is appreciated. I didnt want to ask something thats probaly very simple, but I'm stumped.

there's a heap of ways to do this, but the simplest is to just make a proxy collision mesh that's larger than your table top and is set to not render, and then in the cloth settings turn off edge and polygon collision (leaving just point) this will result in the polygons not being bent upwards at the edges of the tabletop, think of it like a leverage thing happening and it's because theyr'e being collided), it will also make the simulation much faster. this however wont work for all situations.
the main thing to remember is that you need yoru cloth to be modeled to fit what it's going ot wrap around, you would for instance model a round table using an even grid, so the same goes for your cloth, it needs to have a topology that will allow it to deform correctly (and quickly), you only need more mesh density where your'e expecting detail and you want a polygon flow that goes around the form as this will result in a more pleasing effect (a quick way to help do these retopologising tasks is to sometimes make use of the shrinkwrap deformer to shrinkwrap a mesh with the topology you want onto a mesh with the shape you need, and then doa little bit of individual point movement to get teh final shape right).

do a search on this, theres a thread with thorough discussion on rasons and solutions for this behaviour at the edge that you refer to.

Thank's guy's.:)
I've almost got it, but not quite. I'll keep messing with the setting's. It was just odd to me that this would be difficult.
