Hi all,
The question is how to render a shadow cast on an object, but not the object.

Let me explain the trouble: an object cast a shadow on ground. The ground is symbolized by a plan, but i don't want this plan at rendering, just shadow cast on it.
Caus' i have to compose this render with a video on background.

I tried to do something with the buffer panels in render>>output tab, but i don't know if all settings have to be done there.

In Lightwave it can be possible with "Shadow opacity".

Thanks ahead for answers.

david.

This is something I struggled with on a recent project.

My solution was to hide the casting object from the camera and turn the ground plane white with 0 diffuse and 1 translucency.

Change your background to white as well.

This will give you a black and white image of just the shadow. Then in your compositing program you layer the shadow in with multiply or darken.

Worked for me.

A propper shadow buffer would be ideal though.

I thought messiah could render the shadow but not the object...so you could do something similar to this: http://www.maxoncomputer.com/tutorial_detail.asp?tutorialID=243
