If your using 3dsmax9 I'd stick with Mental Ray.
The latest version MR 3.5 is brilliant.
Its been a while since I used vray but I cannot
see any advantages over Mental Ray v3.5.
Except for render passes in the latest version of Vray.
As far as tutorials go I would check out the ones that
come with 3dsmax9, they have pretty good insight to MR.
The help file for the Arch&Design shader is really well written,
easy to understand. (thanks to MasterZap).
The learning curve for Mental Ray v3.5 (max intergration)
is pretty easy compared previous releases.
Coming from XSI, I brought 3dsmax9 just for Mental Ray v3.5 and the unlimited
render nodes and I haven't regretted it of a second.
Mental Ray v3.5 is the ants pants for me !!

It's quite admirable for Mr. Bradley to undertake this project, since there is a desperate shortage of good MR training material!
On the other DVDs... There are some that give basic understanding (Lynda's materials and lighting, Gnomon's Maya are quite applicable). Evermotion's one is very bad quality, though I may check it out again, I'm hungrier now. But on the advanced stuff - there is nothing, really. Reading forums and experimenting, for now. It would be awesome if there is some advanced stuff - more than what you can get in the excelent tutorials that come with max, for god's sake!

We have a handful of dvds for mental ray/maya. The info in them is applicable to max, but the
problem with them is they arent really providing any info that you could not get from the web
for free. They were all too basic, as far as ligthing /materials go. I was really disapointed.
