View Full Version : Vehicle: Titanic - April 10, 1912 Southampton
Hi
I saw that guys are posting their personal projects in new thread, so I try it now. I never submitted any work of mine to a competition, but I plan to do so right now, I plan to submit this work for the animago 2003 contest in still category. Anyway this is an animation, but I had no time to completly finish it since 1999 :)
Please tell critique about it, I'd like to know if it's ok for submission or not.
Thank you!

I´d like to comment on this one, but it seems that www.extra.hu is down or something. I get no ping nor the picture itself. If it is the same as shown in your avatar I like it very much. I remember seeing this picture a long time ago and I loved it!

Yes it's the same as in my avatar, just some extra details in it. Like the seagulls.
Is it downloading for you guys? If you cannot see it, just tell, I try to find another server!

i can see it...very good!
i've seen it before and i wanted to ask you something: you said it was all done on a pentium2 64 ram or something...how the hell is that possible?
anyway...how much compositing is in there...and don't tell me it's all rendered in a still frame couse i won't belive you :D
"the force strong in you is..." :D

can't see the picture :annoyed: and it looks so good
Try uploading a copy at my forums.
Ohh...shit. Sorry guys. This website is working properly for me. I uploaded it to Stephen's forum, but the link is not an image, but a php. So I re-edited the link, so it must work!
Max forever:
Oke, I don't mind if you don't belive it, but there are only one composition layer on it, and it's the seagull layer, I added it last week :) I started the project on a P133 with 128MB and a 8MB FireGL pro. Now I have a Dual PIII 1000 with 2GB of RAM so now I have enought power to finish the animation (but don't have time :)

Yes it works fine... and wow youve got some detail there!!! All those people! absolutely great... Only one critic... those steam towers look too brassy, probably because you used a high specular... try lowering that a bit...
othwerise... you've got 5 stars from me!!!

I think I saw a render of the nose of your ship. Don't you have any images on web about the ship? I planned totally the same anim for fun, but the ship doesn't fi under the bridges of Budapest :p
Anyway it's a good idea, and I like the ship's model, but you should work on the shader of the ship and the lighting to match the Real video plate. I like the idea anyway

No, I'm from Tatabanya, 60km west from Budapest, but my Company is in Budapest.
You told your's is an old project...mine too. It's done in 99 :) But few weeks ago I reopened it, as now I have strong rendering capabilities, so I started rendering the animation, and added the seagulls. Now I'm thinking to prepare it to render in brazil, and make some compositing...but I really don't have enough time for it :(

don't you have a renderfarm there?
and i sugest you try vray...it's much faster and the quality the same...take a look at this animation i've done in vray
www.visualart.ro/temp_img/dragos_jieanu/workshop.avi
with brazil it would take 3 months to render...with vray i've finished it in 2 weeks ;)
btw...what rezolution are you planning to render the animation? 720/576?

I've rendered the first sequence in PAL widescreen. There will be some post process in after effects to make it looking like a real celluliod strip like in the movies. No, I don't have a renderfarm :) But I've got a Dual PIII 1000 with 2 GB of rams, so 1 frame in this resolution took about 16-20 minutes.
I like that workshop anim. Looks great. Maybe I'll try VRay if I find it (I'm out of MAX businnes, becouse I'm using Maya for more that 2 years)

I am quite impressed by this work. It shows much effort and attention to the details.
Will you post some general non-scene views of the ship itself?
I am sure many would like to see the many details you have modeled.

This looks great!!! I really love what youve done with it. The only crit i see is that the bird in the middle seems a little cockeyed. Not natural. otherwise, CHEERS!
stradi
Wich one gull is too big? The one that is about 30-40m of the camera (the ship is about 200m), or the one that seems to be above the people down there?
Eman597
I'm still working on the gulls. Thanks for the crit.
D.Phoenix
Sorry I wont :) I created this scene to view from this distance (I did it on an MMX233, so I had no chance for better detailing), I don't want to destroy the illusion by showing the ship much closer :) Maybe I can post a wireframe max shot if you like...

Hi neu!!
For me, its a legendary pic for a long time:-) !!! This is my first chance to congratulate you! Cool stuff, man! I cant image a scene like this (over 690 characters) in 3dsmax without crashes all the time and working with it!! Big respect:thumbsup:
I am really interested to see some of your recent work cos it must be miles away from 99 works:buttrock:
Keep posting, man!
Cheers
NeonGuy
Libor
Thank you! It was the first time I dealed with charachters, and I think the last one ;) It's not that hard to manage them. I saved certain parts of the ship and the dock to separate files, And I worked on them separately. There's a brunhc of the guys on the nose, a brunch for each boarding bridge, and the guys in the dock. Then I merged them into the main scene. But now I have no chance to modify any of them in the main file :) There's a REALLY BIG chaos in the viewports, it's impossible to select anything :)
Unfortunately it was my last big project, as now I have a software developer company, and I have no months to work on a hobby project. Now I'm building an F-16D Fighter in Rhino at home, and got an original designed VTOL aircraft done in Rhino and Maya. And one more, I have a plane crash accident in progress.

Okay, here's a pic from the ship only without any shaders to see the details. (Some opacity maps are missing here). One more is coming soon.

An excellent model, neu
I also have a plastic model of the ship here and from a comparison I can say it is quite accurate.
Did you use subdivision method of modelling the main hull or another method?
Well done.

By the way - you said you didnt deal with details but the Titanic model is simply amazing! Have you rendered any other views of the scene cos it screams for zillion of views:) :) :)

I have the Academy 1/350 scale R.M.S. Titanic, and the kit is not really accurate. There are some additional details on my 3D model what the real scale stuff doesn't have. I plan to buy some aftermaket details from Tom's Modelworks. Now it's in box, I even not started becouse of it's inaccuracies. But it will be ok with the eftermarket stuff. (Unfortunatelly I don't have time for this kit now, I have 3 simultaneos scale modell project in progress :)

I forgot....No, I didn't use subdiv, the hull is from spline, I used SurfaceTools for it.

hmm wut does the hardware have to do with anything
i confused
dont mind i new but.. ?
Goon
This white sky is the morning fog in the bay. I think ;)

Big birds? How far is it from the camera? :) You don't know. There's a seagull close to the ship, but nobody noticed it becouse it's far as the ship, and it seems much smaller. The gulls you guys saying to big are close to the camera. It can be reognized in motion better. Thrust me, I know how big is a seagull :)

Sorry but I don't understand you question exactly. (maybe becouse my poor english)

DaRt: the main reason they were asking about the hardware used was the fact that the image is very complex, and to have been created so long ago is nothing short of incredible...
