heya,

i actually have been viewing threads here for awhile, but decided to join because i've hit a stump in working in max. more like a wall.

anyways, i've been working in max for awhile, (started in school) and started getting some books on it. the first book i bought was 3dsmax 4 ground rules by michael peterson. which was a pretty basic book, got through half way and felt it was to slow and not as in depth as i wanted. so, i got kim lee's inside 3dsmax 4, which i cant even get one lesson fully completed. its apparently beyond me, and im find its riddled with errors. this book is driving me mad.

so, im wondering if anyone has some suggestions as to what books are good for a beginner->intermediate person who wants to work in max.

in the mean time, im going back to ground rules, cause kim lee is making me feel dumb. grr.

yes i know what you mean ..

Kim Lee's inside 3ds max book is pretty Hard to follow even if you had prior months in 3ds Max, and its full of print errors, i convinced myself that if i could only finish the charater rigging part of this book i would be ready for the industry ... :D

what i've done to counter this kind of unequal duality is try some other books from other packages ... i know its sound ridicule but modeling in Max (Poly) is not really too far from Maya or lightwave ... some of the basic things like extrusion and cut and you get new advise from some other 3D Maniacs that you wouldnt get if you sticked with only 3ds Max insiders, this as worked for me but something else might work for you .... but for the Kim Lee inside 3ds max part i Totally agree

I've not seen Kim Lee's book (though I've heard good things about it) but every 3D book I've looked at and in particular New Riders is riddled with so many errors that you'd think it was proofed by a blind person with no knowledge of 3D whatsover and many of these completely negate the tutorails within. Whilst its good to look at books tutorials etc to my mind you only really start to learn when you set yourselves things you want to do and if you can't figure them out then go on all the boards and get help from people who can pont you in the right direction. A great site for tutorials as it links to a vast amount of tutorials in many programmes is www.3dbuzz.com. :)

Inside 3ds max 4 is a good book but somecomplicated.

What do you want to learn?

modelling, animate, rinning , texturing rendering is imposible to have all this infromation in a perfect book.

For me is better to buy a specific book in one of this fields , and they dont need to be specific for max,the important things are the concepts , you allways can make what book says with a little help of internet tutorials and maxbooks.

If you want a specific book for some fields ask me

thanks for the responses,

one thing that was really throwning me back in kim lees book, was that as i was reading and then creating something, i would look at the supplied image, and see something totally different, which caused me to second guess myself. so i started doing the trial and error, which is good, cause i was learning on my own, but i had no idea if what i was doing would be good for later stages of the modeling process, and it usually wasnt.

mostly, when the book says, "use a FFD 2X2X2 modifier", i think well, why not a FFD 4X4X4, that seems better cause i can do a lot more with the modeling n stuff.

character modeling is really interesting but i feel its going to take time to work, (of course), but texturing is another thing. im pretty strong in photoshop n like programs, and i've been thinking i should focus on this area as its a bit more of a stronger skill of mine.

im hoping to land a job as a concept artist with a game developer something soon, oh god i hope sometime soon.

anyways, i look forward to your suggestions, thanks.

i was reading and then creating something, i would look at the supplied image, and see something totally different, which caused me to second guess myself.

did you remember that somewhere in Kim lee's book it is mention that the people that did some of the tutorials made for the Book where made by online artis that probably will never meet in real life ... Hence this is why they say something in the book and Magicaly have something different displayed on the page ...
