Hi, folks... =D

This is my graduation project, a short film for the Graphic Design course at UFG, Brazil.

It´s a remake in homage to Chuck Jones and his classic One Froggy Evening (Warner Bros., 1955). Actually, we made the first scene of the cartoon.

I did all 3D stuff, including textures (my girlfriend helped me on these). The background is 2D, and was made by my group mate. We´ve used Blender for 3D and Gimp for 2D.

The links point to the short and a Making-Of, this one inspired by the amazing fellas at Gobelins (http://www.gobelins.fr/):

Why do this? I mean you can only ever be compared unfavourably with the original work when you verbatim copy something as well known as this.

Unfortunately here the comparison really isn't so good, you should work on the weight, 2D and 3D are very different media, what in 2D is slow and dramatic, carefully timed, in a direct 3D copy can simply look like it's floating, the characters move in a low gravity zone it looks like, they lack finesse and charm, overall the animation looks very unfinished.

Modelingwise they also lack the charm of their 2D originals, it's very rough and ready, looking like subd'd too low res boxmodelled meshes.

Composition and color is of course copied verbatim from the original here, and can't really be faulted too much, though during the deconstruction segment the incongruity in stylisation between the motion, blocks and dust clouds doesn't work, try creating a more stylised dust that fits in with the style of everything else.

At the end of the day you should be pleased at having finished a small animation project, however maybe next time try to create something unique that's your own, and keep working on your animation abilities. Good luck!

Hi Per-Anders,

Thank you very much for downloading the file and posting your answer.

"Why do this?" Well, a quick answer to your question is: "to learn from the best" :)

The goal of the project is to learn from a great master. Chuck Jones gave us that masterpiece after being on the business for more than 20 years, so I'm not that arrogant to think my short would be even close to the original.

I'm very happy to read your words about what could be improved. They surely will help me a lot on future projects. Now, as you very wisely said, it's time to work on an original idea.

I've visited your site and watched your reel. Congratulations, you have a strong work.

Cheers
