Title: Captured Beast
Name: Julianna Kolakis
Country: Canada
Software: Deep Paint, mental ray, Photoshop, XSI, ZBrush

Here's one of the pieces that I completed for my demo reel~ The beast is part of a scene including two other characters, where it has been captured against it's will to lure the Goddess Sovanna.

Great beast. Itīs fantastic. I love the mixture between dinosaurs, octopuss and lion. The metal is very well done, and the vegetal part of his head is great too. Congratulations Julianna, you made great work.

What a wonderfully weird creature; love the design. It's very painterly and wouldn't look out of place in a storybook. Nothing in it screams CG which is a nice change.

The design is great, very cool creature. However why is it not in pain? I would think it would be howling with the chains imbedded in it's skin. Also the chains do not feel like they are pulling at its flesh, but rather just floating oddly. Wouldn't it be fighting to get free?

Hey thanks mikeldi, Allure, Dmaxer, koony (so flattered!), siouxfire, and Womball! It took me a while to come up with the concept so I'm really glad you guys like the design!

Really appreciate the critiques Womball. This is one of my first models so I struggled with posing the beast and getting the right facial expression. I wanted him to look more like he's given up on escaping and has been numbed by the pain. I thought I was on the right track, but I started getting closer to the finished product and realized I could've done things differently to improve it. It was a great learning experience though. I should've fixed the chains, but I think I'll end up tweaking it just on the 3D still if I have the time.

Thanks again everyone :)

Hello again. I see the rating has dropped and there are a few comments regarding the realism, but to me it works perfectly as you have it now. It's very painterly and allegorical. It reminds me of old, narrative woodgravings. There have been a lot of depictions of painful acts where is isn't explicit; think of all the paintings of crucifixions.

I could criticise the background but it serves it purpose; my criticism I realised would actually be pushing you toward creating something in my own style so pointless really. Grab your style and hold onto it. I can't wait to see more.

Hi Julie. well, you know how much I admire you and your work, you are an extremely talented person, and I feel fortunated to experienced this whole year with you, you are one huge inspiration to me. your beast looks really beatuiful, very cool fantasy sparkly mood. and with those chains going trough the beast's flesh, man, I can feel his pain. is like I've been there.
cant wait to see your whole thing together with the goddess demon and beast, you are amazing, congrats julie!
