I have just completed a short film 'A Lonely Sky' , starring Keir Dullea (2001, A Space Odyssey, The Good Shepherd), Paudge Behan (Veronica Guerin), Padraic Delaney (The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Legend). I wrote, directed and co-produced

There is approximately 5 minutes of entirely CGI effects in the finished film of 12 minutes and 40 seconds. This was all completed at 2k resolution (1920x1080) for projection in theatres as a scope print.

All the exterior/aerial sequences are CGI. Initially I felt I wouldn't have to explain that, but it seems to have fooled some people, which is the right reaction I guess!

I completed all the effects work by myself, with a lot of moral support from friend and colleagues.

There is a website up which has some effects breakdowns, trailers in Standard and High Definition, and some shameless self publicity in the form of a short 'Making of' documentary.

There are SD and HD trailers for the film on the front page.

I can't put the entire film up yet because of some festival stipulations or something like that, but will as soon as I can.

I look forward to hearing what you think

Cheers

Nick

Most Impressive.

It's very reminiscent of Kaufman's The Right Stuff (which I loved), but I'm really impressed by the quality of the cinematography, cast and effects. You put a lot of us to shame... Can't wait to see the rest and good luck for the festivals.

Congratulations Nick! It looks fantastic. I loved the vfx - its unobtrusive, and does exactly what its meant to.

Good luck with the festivals, it deserves to do well looking that good!

Looking forward to seeing the whole film.

This looks like a 50 million dollar feature. The film and the effects are very high quality, amazing to pull it off with a zero budget and especially doing all the effects work yourself. Congrats, look forward to seeing when it reaches the festivals over here.

Hey Nick,

Ruairķ here, just saying hi!

Btw, if anyone here doesn't know exactly who Keir Dullea is - he's DAVE in 2001.

Also, Nick here produced my new short film. So I owe him extra thanks for that. Anyways, best wishes for the film, and everything else. See you in pizza stop!

R.

Thanks to all for the fine comments. I really appreciate them. I was expecting more criticism to be honest! The standard of work here can be truly exceptional.

EricM - thanks, and yes it does indeed share a similar feel, and that is down to historical accuracy to a point. It's time and location are shared, but it ends there I think!

JoeBananas - hopefully I can put it up online soon.

Mattmos - only 50 million? http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

Hey Ruairi, thanks for the kind words, and please find below a visual representation of Keir then and now. I tried to get an image of him as the older man in 2001 but this one is familiar to people...beside one from my own film.

Cheers

Good man yourself!

The makeup on 2001 was pretty accurate (39 years apart 1966-2005!).

Well I was lucky enough to go along to the screening in the IFC in Dublin a while back. Had only seen the trailer before then, and was eager to see the film.
I have to say hats off Mr Ryan. Its two things for sure, (among others), a lovely story and a visual treat.
If you havent seen it try to. Its very much worth it.

Love the website too Nick. Shiny!
