Hey guys, need a major biggie on help :)

Im working on a motion graphic piece and the china map is involved so i spent quite afew hrs in illustrator tracing the coast of china all round it. I thought it was gonna be simple, trace then use a extrude with caps to get the piece of geometry. But the issue is i think theres just too many vertexs resulting in missing parts of the geo...sometimes it looks like the polygons are connecting from one side to the other end causing holes in other areas.

Ive tried reducing the number of vertices from 40,000 to 4000, now im at 600 which works just fine but its lost so much detail. How should i go about doing this instead? Displacement? I would prefer a polygon piece cause itll be easier to animate and control.

Thanks so much guys!

are you using filled caps to close the shape? i just tried it with a spline that had about 4,000 points and it closed perfectly as long as i would use n-gons and caps, but screwed up with filled caps.

maybe you can create it without rounded edges and bevel it afterwards? but a spline-object with 4000 points converted into polys will probably be quite heavy...

Hi Kinematics - 40000 points is some vector, must have taken a while! The trick is to use 'Regular Grid' for the caps, after setting Caps to 'Quads', with a grid size that gives you a nice even spread of polys (depends on your profile size) - and also adjust the 'Intermediate Points' setting of the extruded spline, 'subdivided' is a good option for most profiles or maybe 'none' in this case as it seems you already have enough details.
Good luck - C
