A new version of the VLC media player has just been released (0.8.6). VLC is a video/audio player that can both play and encode. It is an alternative to Windows Media Player and Apple's Quicktime.

Major new features: It can now play WMV 9 video, as well as Flash video, improved H.264 decoding, and support for Apple Remote (on the OS X version).

I hope this version doesn't crash with out even starting up on a recently formatted Windows installation. We shall see..

They need better skins too..

VLC is the awsome (ugly) swiss army knife of video playback. All hail VLC!

I think it's great. If you don't like the players from the corporate vendors, then VLC is a good alternative.

For Mac users, the WMV ability is especially useful now that Microsoft has dropped support for their Windows Media Player on Mac.

And for Windows users, VLC gives you improved H.264 video playback.

I sometimes use VLC to play back DVDs. It gives you more options.

Ah, glad to get rid of WMP on my Mac once and for all :)

No, it is not. It is an alternative to Quicktime Player. Quicktime is a framework, not an application. It's not like you can plug VLC into other applications as you can do with Quicktime.

As for WMV support on the Mac, why not just use Flip4Mac? Works great, IMO.

Amen to that. I was thinking about when they were going to update it about half an hour ago, as it happens! Thanks for posting.

VLC is fantastic. It plays anything you throw at it. I use it far more than quicktime because quicktime has a hard time playing weirdly encoding porn files I get from limewire. Long live VLC! The universal porn player!

I wish they improve the control option when you are in full screen, it's really annoying to rihgt click and do everything.. it would be lto better if controls come automatically when you movie your mouse. and also their forward and reverse thing is so messed up.. It does not show you at what pace you are moving forward, which is annoying too.. Everything else is pretty much fine... And yeah, they need to improve theri skin..

Thanks for the update news, I am downloading as I write.
I turned to VLC When Quicktime started to struggle recently.
I downloaded DivX Player ( Mac OSX ) yesterday seems like a well mannered application, so far.

Must look at the other apps mentioned.
