View Full Version : how to bump map?
bluestreak 02-14-2003, 06:37 PM hi all,
i know how to apply a texture and place it where i want, by selecting the faces and then applying a planar map, then going
to the UV editor and positioning the UVs on the texture.
but, as the subject line says, i'm not sure how to apply a bump map properly.
whenever i apply bump map on an object, it tiles over the whole object.
can someone please tell me how to apply the bump map to a specific region, ( i'm guessing, it's similiar to applying a texture)
i'm trying to apply a logo to an object, and have it 'appear' to indent in the object.
thanks in advance.

you use the UV texture editor? or are you just using gizmos to move around in the viewports? if you extend the uvs outside the top right grid, it causes the texture to repeat... are they?
before i learned thoroughly how the uvs worked... i used a work around in visualizing where the bump map would end up. i would just put the bump map as the color, then after it had been placed correctly i broke the connection, then drop dragged the connection onto the bump node.

Use a 3d projection as the map type instead of 'normal'. Use the 3d placement gizmo to properly locate and scale the projection. then go into the 2d placement node and uncheck wrap U and V, see if that helps

thanks for responding jimiyo and JasonA,
you're right jimiyo, your technique is a little confusing, so i couldn't really get the look i wanted...
however, i did try your way JasonA and it did do what i wanted
although there were a few problems...
i was able to get the bump to the place i wanted by doing what
you said...moving and scaling the projection...
but,
1. the bump was projected on both sides of the object
2. i was not able to adjust the depth of the bump (i tried the bump depth value)
3. the border of the texture is also bumped onto the object,
even though the bump map is completely white, and only
the logo is black.
hope you can help again...thanks

i'm able to adjust the bump value now...
but, can anyone please help for problem 1 and 3 for the above thread.
thanks again.

Cool, glad it helped. As far as the other problems go well I'll only be partially helpful.
1. I've being extrememly frustrated by the "rear face projection" problem. Unfortunately, there are only work arounds from what I've learned. You can either A) seperate the back faces so its not the same object or B) change the projection type from planar (default) to cyclindrical with a slight curve to it so it appears ok on the normal side and is not visible on the backside.
I know, what a pain in the butt... You'd think they'd just have a way to turn that off but from what I can tell, they don't. Usually when I'm doing this sort of thing, I seperate the backside...
3. The default color is what the bump "zero" point is, so if its not black, then everyhting around your map has a slight bump to it. Go into the section where you have the bump map file. Then expand the Color Balance rollout. There, you will find the Default Color is grey. Change it to black instead. Should fix the prob. (btw, i usually use white on black for my bumps, I guess its abitrary since you can have +/- bump values, but the color balance settings I mentioned need to reflect the "proper" state. So in your case you might wanna change the grey to white :))
Oh as a side note, don't forget to parent the 3d projection node for this map (in the outliner) to the object its projecting on. Else when you animate the object, the bump will not move it it and hence slide off your model when it moves away from the projection.
Cheers

thanks for responding again JasonA,
your advice to adjust the Color Balance to get rid of the border of the bump worked like a charm.
as for the bump projection, too bad there isn't a work around to
get it not to project on both sides of the object...
your tip to use the cylindrical map helps a lot.
however, i did figure out a way to get the bump map where i wanted...
i just placed the logo on the bump map to correspond with the
texture map. since it's one plane that's projecting both the
texture and bump map on the object...
thanks again for all you help.
