View Full Version : Character: Samurai Ant WIP
LPlasma 02-14-2003, 04:44 PM First off, ahoy, I'm a student at DigiPen (freshman 3d animation major). This is a character I'm working on for an animated short project for school. It will be 30 seconds long. I plan to use it (and other assets I have created) to try to get an internship over the summer. Input is appreciated. Here's a preview pic:

I like it, it looks very cute. I like the mixture of realistic (guns and sword) with the comical (the ant). Can't really crit much but thats partially cause most of your pics are very dark and don't reveal alot of the form very well. I think you shoud drop the background pic for now and perhaps with a more global lighting scheme.
Since your model appears to be essentially finished, maybe a GI style render would be more appropriate
;)

Yeah that background was just a temp when I was testing the raytraced reflections that I put on his eyes and the scabbard for the katana.

Yeah, Melvin still works here. He is around for "tech support" type things and he goes really in depth on his input on people's projects. He's not a teacher for any classes this semester though, last semester he was one of the teachers for ANI110 (pre-production).

Oh and in case anyone was wondering I'm using 3d studio MAX 5.1 and Adobe Photoshop 6.0. It uses a lot of procedural textures to build up the base diffuse + bump bitmap images. It uses falloff maps rather extensively on the bump, specular level and diffuse slots. It's all rigged on top of a biped with a few extra bones (for the bandana, antenna, and such) and has a few dynamic hierarchy (link constraints) for objects that will change their parent (like the katana). It uses morph targets for the facial animation and it's all structured fairly logically w/ edge loops + such so deformation is not much of a problem (though most of the joints are seperate elements due to the exoskeleton nature of the character). I'll post some more pictures of the short as it progresses, I have the scene ~80% done and I expect to finish it up + start animating within around 2 weeks.

not to be a nitpicker or anything, but it looks more like a ninja than a samurai? =) otherwise lots of character!

Ah, that's true. Samurai Ant just sounded more 'fitting', flows off the tongue more than "Ninja Ant", though maybe that's just me.

i think the eyes don't match the model. There's just something about them. The model looks very much like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles style, which is cool, but then the eyes makes it look like maybe it's a person in a suit.

Here's a closeup of the eyes, what do you suggest I do with them? I kind of get what you're talking about, but specifics would help. Thanks.

Keep the eye texture, but ad a clear faceted layer to the eyes to more closely suggest a "bugs" eyes.
Your Ninja ant looks cool, I love anything that has to do with warriors. Especially Chinese, and Japanese.
By the way, I am new to this site, and I was wondering, How did you put a picture in your thread, so you can see it, not a Hyper link.
Like you are doing.

The faceted layer is a good idea, I might mess with that to see what I can come up with. As for how I post the pictures, use the "IMG" button when making a post, it asks you for an URL then you can put the link in there and it'll insert the vB code into the post for you. Or you can just type it in yourself once you know the tags ([img ] url [ /img] without the spaces).
Lets see if the picture shows up.

Alright, thanks
