If it's something not complex such as what you've listed above then you need to create either an underlying bone system or link the objects together into a hierarchy. If you opt for the second choice, you will need to move your object's pivot locations to where their intended joint will take place.
I suggest you read up on that big tutorial book and CD that comes with your purchase of 3dsmax. There's a lot of very useful and quick pased step-by-step lessons there along with all the supporting files.
Ok, for rigging with primitives there are some basic video tutorials
on this site
http://www.redpixel.com.br/videotutoriais.asp
They are on the bottom of page and you need to register first to access them.
On '3d-Palace' is also one called 'The Imperial Sentinel'
Link: http://www.3d-palace.com/index.php?page=tut1 needs registration too
and for a complete rigging with primitives you should check Conny Klasson's
video tutorials about creating his character 'Boxman'
Link: http://hem.spray.se/conny.klasson/
using underlying bone system is maybe easiest method for begginer so here's tut
for that option too
http://www.jeansimard.com/html/apu_leg_rigging.avi
You should find all you need by watching these tutorials
