Title: Nelumbo nucifera or Just a fairytale …
Name: Emile Noordeloos
Country: Netherlands
Software: Painter, Photoshop
I finally finished this painting I started many months ago. The whole scene started with this medusa, her dress and the sacred lotus flower. An imaginative story about the meeting of medusa and a water nymph who tries to persuade her ( using the magic of the flower) to come closer to the edge of the water (sinister intensions.. no doubt ) somewhere in a forest far far away.The waternymph is trying to mimic the medusa to make her less suspicious. Seeing beyond the masquerade of what appears to be just a beautifully dressed woman, she takes on the appearance of a horrible creature….
Initial sketching and design was done in Painter. When it was halfway done I imported it into Photoshop and never went back. I hope you like it.

The quantity of details is incredible and I really love the work you did with water (see the last cropout). I think that there are few troubles with Medusa's right arm and leg and the Nymph's head that in my opinion is a little too big if compared with her breast. Of course this last point can be a matter of taste.
What I really appreciate in all your pics is your capability to tell a story. Really. The viewer starts a trip to all the worlds you describe. Each time. For all these reasons and for the lion's head that is INCREDIBLE, you got my 5 stars.
Serena.

I like it! Full of details at every corner! I like the idea that the snake come from the hair, nice blending, and the place medusa sitting on look like a lion head, cool idea!

Hi Emile :)
Really nice work,the attention to details make it really great
i think the skin tones can be more saturated to give it more life
that foliage looks awesome!

Gorgeous work with a great story behind. Love the many details in here, just can't stop looking. I like the very realistic look of the girls face and hair in a totally unreal scene. 5 stars for sure. :applause: Britta

Your rendering of different surface qualities is great. So much to take in. You said you never went back to Painter after halfway through...does that mean you fell in love with Photoshop? Or is this simply your preferred workflow. Thanks for sharing this painting.

Emile,
Another super job here !
I agree with someone else that some parts of the image could have had a little more saturated colors, but well, that's a detail ....
A pleasure to see a new piece from you and hope you will continue to "nous émerveiller".
Another one for the Ballistics' books and surely for the 2D Choice Gallery.

@ João Paulo: Thank you and welcome to CGTalk!
@ Serena: Thank a lot for your useful comments & nice words too
@Chris: Thanks, I’m glad you like it
@ Stanislaw: Thanks, I feel honoured.
@ Perapon: Thanks
@ Weng Foong:Thanks, love the lion too. It was a real challenge to make It look the way it does
@Ahmed: Thanks, I might change the colours a bit if it ever goes on print oslt.
@Michael: Thank you and nice to meet you again. You are a great example to me you know!
@Linda: Thank you your critical but very useful comments!
@Debbie: Thank you!
@Mohammad Reza: Thanks
@Hosein: Thanks
@Britta: Thanks for the nice compliments
@David: Thanks
@Bill: Thanks, I love both painter and Photoshop for different reasons. I like Photoshop more when I comes to “pushing pixels around” like I did when painting the dress. Painter interacts with the lower layers or gives you white smears instead of transparency I never understood why you can’t turn this off. (Sometimes it’s very desirable>> beautiful blendings etc..)
@Gitte: Thank you, I’m happy to meet you again, I miss you :)
@Konstantin:Thanks
@Mikeldi:Thanks

Thanks for your reply, Emile. Yes it does seem that different category brushes have their own behaviors in Painter, depending on whether you paint on the canvas or on a layer, or have that 'pick up underlying color' option ticked. Sometimes I wish PS allowed you to turn 'on' a color pickup/smear mode from the layers below, like Painter does, if you so choose. But, you clearly use each program's strengths to great effect! Thanks again.

Wow I really like this painting topest of the notches.:thumbsup:
Whats really cool, in the cutout of the painting by her foot, in the myst it looks like a guy riding a horse. I dont know if that was intentional but still caught my eye, very cool.

not that i could do 10% of this artwork (which is absolutely beautiful, congrats!) :)
but i have to ask this, 'cause it is bugging me since the first sight:
Shouldnt the left character be closer to us in order to have the side perspective of hers work - if she was to hand the flower directly to the right character ?
another way to explain this:
it seems to me that the left characters body is cut down too early by the water..
because of this, it seems that they are not in the same plane (the left char. is behind the right), so the side view of the left cant work, if she was to handle the flower to the right with this perspective..
i have to tell you that i'm not looking for errors, just curious about wether i'm right or wrong..
hope i'm clear,
sorry for my english,
and thanks for sharing this great artwork !
I just not only dislike to theme, but the execution is so poor!
what about the out of place blurs ?? (left character's arm...)
and the lack of details very there should be some
I don't like it... just my taste anyway

*sigh* Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there are nicer ways of stating critique. It's the hallmark of maturity and a professional attitude. ;)

Not sure this is front page material, but if you want to make it better, you should unify the light sources, and put the characters/background in the same perspective. And dont rely on the smudge/liquify brush so much, its not effective, and it cheapens the image.
I totally agree with Briareos, this piece definitely would benefit a lot from more consistency overal.
But well, as long as an audience is happy, I guess the goal is reached!

Quite pretty! The details are very nicely done, especially like the face of the right character, though it could use a bit translucency... My main crit is that there's no real point of interest and my eye drifts over the picture, not toward a certain point. I would place an opening in the trees above, so the sunlight hits the right character from the top right, main focus on her and then maybe a bit more light on the left character... that would certainly make it stand out more. But since this is a final piece I'm sure this will stay like that, great work nevertheless.

Stunning!
Very beautiful and sexy! I like the story behind and in fact it can be felt from the image itself, which to me alone means nothing less than http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/rating/rating_5.gif :buttrock:
I'm sorry but I don't have any crits.

IMO, the cropped images looks better than the final image itself. due to comments made earlier by Briareos and Mathias about consistency.
it looks like lots of smaller pics put together into one without taking the whole pic into consideration.
mainly because of the to-many lights sources shining from to-many directions casting light almost everywhere. to me this does not evoke any emotions nor story. only details and almost 4 breasts. cropped images looks good though.
Hi Emile,
Inspiring and what a great amount of details in this piece!
And maybe, this is its downfall (for some), there are no main point of interests and like, derby, my eyes kept on passing by this picture to ravel at the details.
Rebeccak is right as well. lol. I do think CiF's intention failed to come across. Possibly due to his English?

A lot of interesting comments.
I know there are a lot of point in my work which I could/should improve. Someone mentioned that it looked like separate parts put together later on. That’s true. Remember I’m working very much in a learning mode and I approach a scene like this as little challenges and work on each one separately Obviously losing my overview with concern to a.o. light source, consistency etc etc. and after working for weeks on end on this one painting I become used to these flaws.
That’s one of the reasons I chose to expose myself on a wonderful place like CGTalk. Which makes it (sometimes painfully) clear that I’m only just starting to learn about the workflow, design and the art of digital painting. But at the same time gives me this great opportunity to learn......
So thank you.

could someone please stick this somewhere publically as an example of how to receive critique?
I was actually thinking, too, that this image lacked unity in lighting and composition as opposed to your earlier submissions.
I do, however, also feel that the amount of detail you are able to give your characters and the imaginative setup might become a trademark of your work. So, while I was thinking that it must actually be hard to have spent so much work on a painting (as anyone can see you did) and then have people tell you that they don't like it for reason A,B,C it is really good to see that you just keep your focus on what you can learn and improve through teh feedback.
looking forward to future masterpieces...
:thumbsup:
