Hi guys,

I'm new to 3D in general. Only about a month and a half in. I am also only a couple weeks into Modo so please excuse my ignorance of what may be quite obvious to you veterans.

I am rendering a small glass bottle and I cannot get any caustics to show up. I have the cap of the bottle laying directly behind it, in its shadow, and no light is coming through the bottle. I intend to fill the bottle half way with water but want to figure out the caustics problem first.

I don't even know where to go to enable the caustics. It's been bugging me for two days and I finally swallowed my pride and decided to ask for help.

I am very sceptical about posting this image due to my obvious lack of field time. But I am open to criticism so let it out. Also any input on how to better these bottles in general would be great. I was asked to render them with the caps on and labels too. I decided to challenge myself and go for the bonus points.

This will not be the final scene. My 3D mentor at work asked me to render these bottles while he renders their display boxes. I will give him my files and he will arrange the final render with proper lighting and all else. This scene is just for me but I will welcome any input about improving it.

Anyway...

Thanks

modo does not support direct caustics in its current form. You can produce a caustic effect as a result from the physical correct shading using indirect methods.

Try using an HDRI or luminous polygons with GI enabled and also take a peek at the shotglass scene included as it will show you the setup to use.

I don't know anything about HDRI as of yet but I created a luminous poly. The caustics show up in the preview render but not in the final render. Any ideas? I will watch an HDRI tute while I wait.

Thanks for your help. Or Cheers as it is across the pond.

Well, I watched the HDRI tutorial and found that it's pretty simple. I dropped in one the supplied HDR images and tweeked my luminous poly. I got the caustics to show but I am not so happy with the blown out left side of the image. I'm going to watch some lighting tutorials now and I probably will not return to this thread.

Just wanted to thank you again for the help. It proved most valuable.

Cheers
