Hello folks, first time I post something mine in this huge community, and I'd like to introduce myself with my first work. About me, as you can see in my profile, 3D has become one of my hobbies since I discovered Maya, one year ago or so. I'm 21 and I come from the province of Como, in Italy, where I study computer science engineering.

Well, now the animation. Here's the YouTube link:

And here you can download the mpeg2 file, for best viewing:
http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=229926

Sorry for that, I don't have a personal space to upload the file, just click the Download tab and you'll get it.

This is 320*240 with production level render settings, the 3D animation is 288 frames long, and with 20-25 minutes to render each frame, it took me days to have it finished. I'd like to render a hi-res PAL 768*576 too, but it will take about one and a half hour per frame, resulting in 5-600 hours for the whole thing... A bit heavy, for my Vaio VGN-S2XP laptop. We'll see.
The scene represent a warm candle on a balcony, between the mountains, and it's been set up this way: materials are a Maya Fluid Effects fluid for the flame, a mental ray dielectric for the glass, a mental ray misss_fast_simple for the wax, and mental ray DGS for everything else, plus the HDR image. Lighting is done via Emit Light by the IBL, plus a point mental ray physical light emitting a little intensity and some caustic photons.

You can see a glitch, an artifact, when the camera moves to the left, before dollying to the candle: the displacement I used on that wood balcony changes its look, it's pretty noticeable, and it also generates a hump near the end of the visible balcony itself.
What could that be?

However, even any other kind of comment on my work is obviously truly appreciated.

Cheers,
Giacomo

I forgot to mention the software ...
Modeling and scene setup with Maya, rendered in mental ray.

Sorry for that ;)

Ain't half bad. I quite like it. Good materials on the glass. Only thing that bothered me was the 2d background, but that's not a problem, it's just style. Nice work.

Great animation/pic. Light is perfect!

I dislike the wood (too many clean) but maybe that "someone" already told this to you ;)

saludos amigos :)
