I may be beginning a project that requires me to do animation (never animated before). Basically it s going to be a character that is basically cut from paper and moves similarly tothe gingerbread man from Shrek. This project may cover the purchase of a new software especially for or secializing in character animation. SO I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions or advice? I dont have a real long amount of time to go out and try each one out there so I was hoping to put a small list to gether from suggestions here then try those and make a purchase from there (feels more educated to start with the pros then go from there).

Things I am looking for in it.

Not so steep learning curve.
Training for the product is available or at least a responsive community

If you dont have a product to recommend some advice or tips would be great. PLease no flame wars. I am lookng to make the urchase with the next few weeks, so this would help me tremendously (also I am familiar with and own LW 8.5, but want to take this opportunity to explore some new realms).

Thanks

I've recently switched from LW to XSI. The rigging and animation tools are fantastic and Foundation is dirt cheap for what you get.

It doesn't take long to get your head around the rigging basics, and it's easy to swap animation data between the two packages if you want to render in LW.

As a student, I was trained in 3dsmax and from that purchased the program that I was trained in.

As for resources, there's a tone of them around the internet and in book form covering 3dsmax and maya.
