alright, I have little experience with UV mapping , but Im catching on:p
Im nearly finished with what is going to be my first Totally complete model, (textured, rigged and animated), I was on a roll earlier today, and really eager to start painting.
(btw Leigh, your workshops...Brilliant, the diffuse slot is my new best friend)
anywho, after trying a mix of cylindrical and planar projections on his head, well I got really frustrated to say the least...
there are just a few things about editing UVs that im unsure of , and seeing as the Mayas docs have very little on the matter, and I couldnt find one single UV mapping Tutorial worth working through, well Ive had to do alot of fiddling....big suprise...

so maybe someone can answer a few of these for me?

1) 1st and foremost, I should probably know this, even though im new to Maya, but How do I assign a seperate map to each projection?
I see an option under the Edit Polys-->Texturing, but it seems
you have to tick this "on" before creating your projections?
and I didnt notice it untill i was almost done...

2) what to do about eyesockets, inner nostrils, ear canal etc...?
when unwrapping these things are always covered anyhow, so should I map them seperately? or...ehr....

3) ummm I know this isnt everything... but im drawing a blank right now...its late...

anywho, heres a headshot,THe eyes being mounted on the sides of his head along with his big ears, are really where my problems are stemming from,
so maybe somebody....anybody...can help to get me started in the right direction here....Before I lose This creative rush ive got going on...and that would be a huge waste heh

Hi,
I'll try to answer your questions. I'm not a pro at all but I know a little bit about it.

1) here is a method : once your projections are done, go to the menu Window/Relationship Editor/UV Linking and there you can connect maps with projections.

2) faces that overlap when unwrapped need to be moved in the window/UV Texture Editor . Simply grab some UVs and move then to have a clean mesh. It's very boring but you have to.... well that's what I do anyway.

3) for the blank... I've not found it yet :p

Hope it helped a little.
Bye

Hey, here's a great tutorial on UV mapping for Maya. He goes through average vertices for problem areas like the nose, ears.

http://www.kniffen.ca/index.php?target=tutorials/texture/UV1.php

Cool stuff on his site too.
