Could anyone running a dual core Opteron PC recommend a good stable video editing app? Both Adobe and Avid software advise using Intel based systems...

Premiere and Avid are the most stable and powerfull editing solutions on any (windowsbased) pc. I would recommend Avid over Premiere any day of the week

From what I have heard or read there are several problems when using Avid on AMD CPUs in general, mostly it messes up the render process - green lines, doubled pictures and stuff like that- while editing itself (hardcuts only, no FX) worked with no problems.

You might want to try Avids liquid series, I stopped working with it when it still was a Pinnacle product, but I liked it much more than I like Avid Xpress. It had some bugs back then, but this is like three years ago.

i've heared the same thing about avid with intel chips ;)

personally i work with avid intesively on athlon, intel and mac machines without problems, but it is true that avid is picky about its configuration. There's always the freeDV version which allows you to test it on your configuration before you buy

I was working heavily for about 6 months on a quad opteron 280 and premiere, apart from the limitations of the software it worked fine.

Well the problem Preimere is you have to render out I changed from Prem Pro to Newteks VT 4.6 and never looked back real time play back no rendering

They are bringing out SpeedEdit soon as a new stand alone application with full HD format support and as it does not include all the bells and whistles of the VT (live switching , video paint full 3D package) it's sales price is well below that of Premiere.

Moree details here http://www.newtek.com/speededit/

and no I don't work for them :)
