You are talking about Paint Effects, right?

Drag the tree brush you are using only a very small amount, just until you see a line of the tree starting to form, don't continue dragging beyond that waiting for the full tree to form, as it will be formed even if you don't see all of it. Usually, dragging about 5-8 pixels does the trick.
