WIP NBA Allen Iveson

Hello friends, I've been trying for the last few days to model and texture Allen Iverson. Before I put more time in texturing, I'd like to get some critques on it. The proportions of the model seem to be off but I can't quite put my finger on the serious offenders. Your help is MOST APPRECIATED, thnx in advance.

-PS: paint overs would be uber cool so I could import them as imageplanes

in case you don't want to google him:

are the images too large by the way...

Post some front and side views (perspective view with small FOV to minimize distortion works well too) since that might be easier to paint on compared to at an angle. Sorry I can't be of any help proportion wise :)

Btw, do you want it to be cartoony or realistic? At the moment it looks more cartoony than realistic. Lastly, the shorts has mostly vertical folds if you look at the photo you posted, maybe do something like that instead of the knee-folds you have now?

Hey Vince, you got quite a ways to go if u wanna get a more realistic look. For starters, his face needs to be elongated from the cheek bones down, his shoulders and torso need to be broader, his arms longer and wider, and his hands should be bigger. Overall it still feels like the limbs were just extruded down. As for the clothing, it seems like its too small on him. I would start by widening the waist/torso area of the shirt, and making the bottom of the shorts wider as well. Take a look at the picture you posted for reference, it should give u a good idea since its a front view. Compare the thickness of his legs to the size of the shorts. Thats about it for now, keep going at it and good luck.

I also agree with the proportions needing refinment. The shorts look too small and almost like tubes. They need to be fuller, and like in your reference pic, appear to flare out. I think the size of the legs have to do with this as well.

Also, there's some inconsistency in your modeling detail. The face and wrinkes of his clothing are modeled in with enough detail, but the cornrows and wrist straps just look painted on. Model in these forms as well.

hello again friends, back with a modeling update

BrazilianDan- thank you so much for those proportions, i tried working all of them into the 2.0 update. really like to read your thoughts on the 2.0 update. & thnx for the luck, i'll really need it. hehe

JustChris- thnx for the adivce chris, i modeled out the wrist straps and jersey accordingly.

I think you're being fooled by his clothes and the perspective in that photo. The proportions are still way off.

From a quick glance:
Arms are too short and small, the knees are too low on the legs and the legs are too thick for the rest of the body.

This might help with proportions:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/ArtSchool/Drawing/HumanForm/Lesson2/mp5.jpg

Also, there are better reference pictures out there for you to grab:
http://www.basketediabete.it/Allen%20Iverson%20MVP%20All-Star%20Game.jpg

http://www.readexpress.com/read_freeride/photos/2006-05-25-iverson.jpg

You should also post some wires, that'll make it easier for people to make crits. Right now I'd say work on the likeness since you seem to want to do something that looks "photorealistic" or close to it. Real life modeling. You'll need to put more into the proportions and likeness of the face. Also think about the silhouette. Choose a completely black color and look at the model from all angles to see if something looks off.
Oh, and he looks like he's going to fall on his back. Make sure the middle of the foot is in line with the middle of the head.

That's the crits I can think of right now.

hey vince. You've made some progress but I think now it looks like he got stretched in Willy Wonkas taffee machine, heh. I've taken ur front shot into photoshop and made some adjustments to give u an idea. Whenever you model, always have a clear notion where the waistline is. Generally the length from the top of a person's head to their waist is the same length as from the waist line down to their feet. Of course it varies from person to person, but thats always a good starting point. One thing I like doing in maya (looks like ur using it too) is creating a set of measurment tools. You can use them, for example, to find out how long his arms are, then find the length from his shoulder to the mid thighs. If you look at the frontal picture 'three' posted, it gives u a great idea of his proportions.

Finally, for his head, it looks better, but the profile is not correct. Again, 'three' posted great reference. Take em into photoshop, rotate them a bit, and use them as image planes to adjust the profile. That'll give u a good start. Also, your wirframe looks real messy in ur first post. The second pic is what good topology should kinda look like (I grabbed it of a topology thread)

Hey Vince, this is starting to look really good! Congrats on the progress, you've already come a long way from version 1.0

Here's what I notice at this point -
1 - The face is still not looking quite there. I've done a paintover on the profile shot for you to get an idea of what I think needs some change.
http://img01.picoodle.com/img/img01/6/12/15/f_iversonpi_a10bm_f6c9372a.jpg
2 - The shirt looks a little wierd near the waist area - I see you tried getting all the folds like the first reference shot 'three' posted, but remember that in the pic, the shirt is tucked in, and in yours you can see the btm. Probably the easiest fix would be to make it look tucked in.
3 - Hands could be elongated a bit, and they're looking a little flat right now. Take a look at that frontal reference pic to get an idea.
4 - Last, the groin area of his shorts looks like an upside-down U. I think if you make it more like an upside-down V, it would look more natural.
Thats about it as far as I can tell.

Nice improvement from before. I have a few crits though. His area where his crotch is come up too high leaving no room for a crotch. Also, I think you should darken the area around his head that his hair grows out of. Because in order to achieve his current look he would have to shave in between his corn rows. Take a look at this image:

http://www.1freewallpaper.com/Sports-pictures/allen-iverson-pictures.jpg

Try and paint some stray hairs into the color map so that the start of the corn rows isn't so abrupt. What resolution are the textures that you're using, and how many tri's is the model now?

Keep it up and keep us posted :)

How many polys is this currently? The head looks quite heavy, having alot of edges doing nothing for the silhouette.

The porpotions looks pretty descent now, although his calves are still a bit too thick.

Reduce the pouting lips some as it's making him look a bit odd.

The head is still bugging me, especially from the 3/4 view, I think it might be the jawline not being defined enough.

Don't rush it, you have to start observing his features more intently. I'm sure you have enough reference but take a look at these

I'm sure he's not proud of this one :)

hello friends, back with version 5

XTitan - gave iverson his manhood back. good call on the hair inbetween the corn rows, really makes his hair more believeable. thnx for the feedback

lildragon- i stripped out the polys that didn't affect his silhouette, his heads alot lighter on polys now. iverson in total is now 8466 tris i believe. I tried to fix his calves too, but they don't feel quite right yet, I appreciate some more input into make them better. I spent alot of hours on the head concentrating on your feedback, but I don't think you can recognize him yet. could you do a paint over of the head, that would be really helpful? thnx for the critque and that front ref of him, i didn't have that one yet.

Hey Vince, congratulations on the model, it keeps getting better and better. However, there are still somethings I think need to get fixed.

First concerning the body, I feel like his legs look a bit bowlegged or open. They need to be a little closer in, so that the inner edge of the shorts are pretty close to touching. That way, his pose will look a little more relaxed.
About his head and face, I feel like his forehead could be brought forward some, including the area above his nose and inbetween the eyebrows. Check out how that seems to curve out more in the profile pic.
The section above the ball of his nose needs to get widened a bit, to make it look rounder, and his nostrils should be lowerd just a bit, to leave the bottom of his nose at an angle.
I would also align the cheek bone with his eyebrow, as they seem to be pretty much at the same level. Right now it looks like the cheek bone goes a little further.
I also feel like his chin should be thinned out just a bit, and his ears look a bit flat. Maybe if you pulled them outward a little, especially the middle part, it would look more natural.

A lot of little things, but I feel like ur model is really close. Just be careful not to exaggerate on any of the corrections and I think ur good. Keep up the good work man, its cool to see your progress.
