Im using maya 4.5 and ive made a pannel and have extruded the edges.....althoe it creates thoes hard edges on the faces...is there any way of smoothing it without adding the extra poly's???

no...

you could use the Smooth command, but that would atleast double your polygons. Otherwise, I believe that you can convert Poly's into Nurbs now with Maya 4.5

happy Maya'ing..

Shoot, I wish I could convert a polygon into a nurbs surface. Maya 4.5 DOES NOT have that option. You may need to get a mel script for that one. I have seen it somewhere, but I forgot where its at.

you can soften the normals which will not do anything to the geometry but when it renders it will appear to be a soft edge... under edit polygons>normals>soften/harden

For the conversion....

Convert polys to subD, and then SubD to NURBS
