I must have had the sound off when I watched the first trailer, which I was excited about.

This truly does look luscious, but my interest dipped somewhat when I heard the incongruously rocking sound track and cheesy cliched dialogue replete with one-liners.

The visuals and the sound/dialogue just don't match for me.

I remember about 2 years ago, oh the History Channel, there was a special on talking about this 300 story with the Spartans, and it really captured my interest. Then I ran across the Frank Miller graphic novel in a Border's and was blown away by it (How could you not be? It's Frank Miller) Then I saw a "making-of trailer" for the movie, and was even more interested. Now this trailer...I can honestly say I haven't been this excited about a movie in a long time. Looks sweet how some of the camera work comes straight from the novel. And I thought the Nine Inch Nails song was perfect. Can't wait.

does anybody know what the historical background of this film is?

This film is based on the Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans and maybe 1000 other Greeks stood against 500,000 to 1,000,000 Persians. No one really knows the actually numbers of the Persian army but it is somewhere in that range. Their mission was not to win but to hold off the Persians long enough for the rest of the Greek cities to gather their forces. The Spartans were the last ones standing of all the Greeks and held the pass for about a week.

Its an amazing story by itself, without any of those "fantasy" elements I'm seeing in the trailer. Parts of that trailer looked more like a wannabee Lord of the Rings remake than an amazing historical battle. I hope this movie gives the story justice.

We did a chunk of those shots at Hydraulx, like with the elephant, rhino, firey explosion debris, that last jumping shot, etc, etc. There is a lot of good work in that movie from all the different studios... everyone should be proud of it.

Really cool looking film...really nailes the comic book down. I would not, in any means, use it to learn much about the Persian wars.

Sadly, one thing that does bother me is how the Persians (conviniently given current events) are portrayed as mindless, ruthless savage badies. Nevermind the incredible ingenuity and culture the Persians had at the time. Persepolis (the capital of the Persian empire) was the envy of the world, even the Greeks. But I guess given the current politics, it is easy to show even the ancient Persians as a pack of bloodthirsty "ragheads".

Your intentions are good, but this movie is not about the development of the Persian civilization, it's about war. A war they were involved in. They were the conquering empire of the time. The story is about those who refused to be conquered by them. It's like crying about how "The New World" portrayed the imperialistic settlers as mostly arrogant pillagers. One could argue... "why didn't they show all the good people back in England, etc, etc" But that's not what the movie is about. Or how about "Roots". Why didn't it show the good things that were traded, or focus on the positives of the time. It was a movie about slavery. Not to mention, I've actually seen "300" and it so bizzare in it's depection of the enemy, and the heores, crying "racism" is kind of pointless. I mean, Persian King Xerxes is 10 feet tall with an army of immortals, who are super ninjas, with bomb throwing wizards and knife-armed executioners! If the movie offends those people (wizards, immortals, rhinos, etc), then I will have to eat my words about the social insensitivity of "300".

[spoiler]

when you watch the movie, its explained why its shown that way. think of a story being told by a fire, and some details are exaggerated. thats what happens here. from the spartans point of view, the persians looked like foreign monsters. the elephaunts were huge beasts that spartans never seen before, and while the story happens, the man that tells the story by the camp fire exaggerates the details, and the imagery that we are shown is exactly what he explains. the effect of story telling this way is amazing.

uh, the Persians/Iranics continually invaded and plundered south Asia, and a Nadir Shah massacred over 17,000 people in New Delhi.

Yes, they were fairly bloodthirsty.

If they werent then they wouldnt have engaged in invasion sprees.

you really have no idea, read the history and know more, as far as i know nadir shah lived about few hundred years ago, that battle took place about 2300 years ago or so.
in anyways, there are no record to show that this battle was true, every history is always one sided to the greeks, as far as greeks know they were the good guys and their gods were the rulers of all, and as far as persians go, well until they get a different gov right now, lets just say these stories will probably remain one sided.

Didn't find this appealing, although the visuals look very nice. I hope the slow-motion bits aren't in the film and are just for the trailer. Really irritated by this style of editing - there's too much of it around in modern filmmaking in my opinion.

I think it was their aim to make some epic story using modern filmmaking techniques...
they probably wouldn't have chosen nine inch nails for the trailer :P

the only thing I don't like is the use of blue/green screen for almost the entire thing...which gives a digital look to everything...

While I do get what you are saying, I do find it ironic and kind of funny that you posted ^^ and yet your avatar is a "raghead" with a knife in his hand. :p
Anyways, I think you are giving people too much credit - the number of people that can actually link "Persian" (old-school name) with "Middle Eastern" (new-school name) is probably a lot less than you think.

I think the visuals look absolutely amazing, and while I wouldn't consider this a historical drama at all, it does look like a great over-the-top action movie. Can't wait.

im sorry Roberto, but we all know its groundbreaking only in the visuals.
8 out of 10 people here will see based on the claim that "it looks awsome"

i may see it for the visuals myself. simply because im in the industry, much like many here.
the novel is great, theres no way it can deliver the same way those comics did. [i read only 2 of them, but still pretty immerssive]
i cant have no faith in holliwood when it comes to comic-to-movie, or "anything-to-movie" fo that matter.
or maybe im being a tad pessimistic. lots of hype and movies fail to deliver, we've seen this too many times.

While I am sure that the historical accuracy of this flick is going to use heaping tons of 'artistic license', I still can't imagine that they all won't DIE in the end - after all, that was one of the defining points of the actual battle.

Hell, I am all against the typical formulaic Hollywood drivel, but stories in general - be they in the form of a Hollywood movie or TV show or a story passed down verbally from generation to generation - are based on many of the points that you posted. That's what makes a story something you are interested in enough to actually watch/listen to.

Folks, I was merely stating an opinion. I wasn't trying to be a hard-ass. I guess I like reading a good deal about ancient history, and love those History channel documentaries. While I appreciate mythical story-telling, and I understand about exaggerations in the tradition; I was merely making an observation. I do not think there is anything meant by the film-makers, and again I have to say visually the film looks great: I know I will be buying tickets to it.

I just would have liked to see ancient world of all cultures be more accurately depicted ever so often by the film-makers. I know many, for example, liked Troy a good deal...but I was cringing through a good part of it. I guess I am a purist.

As for my avatar, I think someone is reading too much into it.:) A Sinbad character holding a dagger is hardly an endorsment of a stereotype...Any navigator or trader in the ancient times would have carried some sort of weapon as he journeyed into uncharted waters and land. I just don't see that being in conflict with my original observation.

Cheers

Hollywood is Hollywood, not History channel. I pay 7 euros to view a great movie, entertaiment, art, not to see a documental.

How many painters along the history didn't show the reality in their paints, how many writers didn't put the pure reality in their novels, Are the Transilvania people all vampires? Was the reason Bram Stoker wrote his novel to insult the Transilvania People ?, I read Dracula, if I was born in the actual Transilvania, must I burn the novel or just enjoy it?... Hey, there is
something call imagination.

The people who make 300 never say they are filming history, they are filming a movie based in a comic, they are not telling to anyone any lies.

you have no clue what you are talking about.

1/2 those points are way off, and the budget is not all that big either.when i saw the screening, the director himself said that his budget was much smaller than he was hoping to get. but in the end it was a good thing because he had to get creative with what to do with the money he was given.

and one thing that you dont see in these trailers( because they mostly contain screaming ) is that the writing, acting and line delivery is very very good.

Okay...I think we should put this topic to rest right now so another breath doesn't have to be wasted on trying to understand it. Hollywood isn't interested in making films which follow historical accuracies to the "T." They never have been, and they never will be. They are interested in taking bits and pieces, and "sexing" them up. If you're looking for historical facts and details, read books, watch documentaries (But even with those, you have to realize that you're still not getting all the info. How could you? You're talking about events that happened hundreds, sometimes thousands of years ago.) I just don't understand how some people can continue to be disappointed with "historical" movies...knowing all we know about how Hollywood works.

adh3d
12-10-2006, 10:13 PM
Because some people use that fact like an excuse to critic Hollywood itself , I don't know why, but sometime this is true. I cannot understand how some people can critic Hollywood ,when the best movies are be made thanks to Hollywood and its system.

Other people simply critic Hollywood because they want to critic USA

Im also pretty sure that they can't mess up the story, its such a great one. The battle of Thermopylae, 480 BC. 300 hundred spartans against millions of persians! How much more epic can you get!

JohnD (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=4047) THANKS for the info.. one other question which maybe hard to answer.. The orchestra/opera song at the very beginning of the new trailer is that something new or is that a song that is already been made?? I can't wait to see this movie because i have checked out the 300 series by Frank Miller, and the lines in the graphic novel are the same as those used in the trailer.. I love to see an idea come full circle.. I used to make my own comics and part of the reason i got into 3d is to give those same ideas motion.. I love the " I DON'T GIVE A F*&K STYLE" that frank miller has in his comics... Part of being an artist atleast to me is being able to break the mold of whats popular and do what you feel.. In writing, drawing, filmmaking, etc there is this structure that most people folllow.. To me the people that break away from these set standards are the artist that i have a tendency to admire... BLAH BLAH BLAH.. i love this trailer...

At last, the long awaited return of the "Man flick"

This will actually make me go to the cinema to watch it (which just goes to show if the quality of the film is good enough people will still pay to watch it. And not download it for free via Torrents)

Hey Weirdo,
I'm not sure what the opera song is during the first half of the new trailer, but the NIN song kicks in about half way through. And I agree...Miller definitely redefined the comic industry with his Dark Knight Returns series, and everything thereafter.

Just finished viewing it...

I was underwhelmed. Its feels like a trailer for LOTR or TROY - even ALEXANDER - but with dodgey Metallica-esque music and rock-gods trying to act "hard". The way they charge into battle wearing capes'n'cod-pieces...its as though they should have electric guitars in their mits...

I'll still most likely go and watch it(I'm usually up for anything these days) but at this point I think it will just be another "Epic of the week"...

The UK posters ROCK! - See them at Empire Online HERE (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=20195). Pretty gutsy having a poster saying, "You will not enjoy this". Wow.
