Curious to know if there's a way to transform a layer or selection from the center while constraining its shape. I know that in Photoshop you can hold down alt/shift and drag corners for this.

Hi remcv8,

To transform a Layer:

Use Effects > Orientation > Free Transform (or Ctrl/Command+Alt+T). Bounding box handles appear at the Layer's corners and on all four sides and the Layer is converted to a Reference Layer.

Hold down the Ctrl/Command key and position your cursor over one of the corner bounding box handles until you see a circular arrow cursor, then click and drag to rotate the Reference Layer. The Reference Layer's center is the pivot point.

Use Effects > Orientation > Commit Transform (or Ctrl/Command+Shift+C). The Reference Layer is converted to a Default Layer (commited to a Default Layer).

To transform a Shape:

Click the Layer Adjuster tool (or F key). Bounding box handles appear at the Shape's corners and on all four sides.

Hold down the Ctrl/Command key and position your cursor over one of the corner bounding box handles until you see a circular arrow cursor, then click and drag to rotate the Shape. The Shape's center is the pivot point.

There's more to know, so read about the Effects > Orientation commands in:

Painter IX Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > Image Effects

On the right panel, click the link named Using Orientation Effects and read the entire page.

At the bottom of that page, in the paragraph under the heading named Free-Transforming Images, click the link named Working with Reference Layers and read that section too.

Hey, thanks for the help. I've read alot of the handbook that came with the proggy, watched most of the videos, looked for it in the Painter Wow book, but couldn't find it.

Still stuck on this one. Maybe it's not available in Painter. I'll live with it.

This feature isn't available in Painter to the best of my knowledge.

You'll find it incredibly easier to do transforms in PS imo. Whether it makes sense to bring the file into PS for this purpose depends on your workflow.

I think if you use Scale instead of Free Transform, you'll be able to transform from the center. Unfortunately, there is no preview--you're limited to seeing only the bounding box until you commit.

Hi Mark,

Oh my. Never use Painter's scale unless you're looking for image degradation. Transform was implemented to improve that, and Photoshop's solution is far superior to Painter's, imo, having I've done tens of thousands (which probably explains my dizzy spells :)

I'm posting simply to alert you to this little caveat in Painter in case you weren't aware of it.

PS. It's possible Corel has rewritten the code for Scale in Painter. If so, I'm not aware of it.
