Check your autobak directory...if you have autobak turned on it will save the scene over some assigned time interval -by default it's set to 15 minutes.

Howdy !

you could try to merge the file into a new one, or check the autoback folder for any "*.bak" file, rename that to .max and get going.
Actually when my comp crashes with max running, max files open fine afterwards, just latest modifications applied and not saved are lost...
and using autoback feature you rarely can loose files.
