Hi there everybody. My first time posting here :) I got a PS some time ago and really started working on cg. I have dabbled with pencil and paper but this time i started learning it with more serious attitude. However i think i've hit a wall on my progress due to a lack of criticism as everybody i know just gives me praises which i know and hope isn't the case here.

I hope you pro's could light my path a bit and give some brutal critique and technique tips.
Here's one done mostly in PS but groundwork was with pencil. I think there something in the knee area...

This is quite good, your friends are not wrong to praise you.

One thing you can fix, however, is the shadow. It looks like we are seeing the girl from side on but the shadow suggests we are looking from a bit higher up.

When I first saw the pic I thought you had just painted over a Poser model because the skin looks kinda Poser-ish.

Otherwise great work! Keep it up:thumbsup:

I actually had the same thought, I was wondering if you were painting onto a poser model. I think that's due to the incredible detail in the painting of the skin compared to the boots and skirt. As far as anatomy goes (in my humble opinion) the things that stand out to me are the arm, the hand, and the feet. The arm looks like it's a touch on the thick side right above her wrist, although that may just be personal preference. The hand looks somewhat stiff, which may be a contributing factor to the poser feel. The angle of the feet looks off, but I'm not experienced enough to tell you how to fix that.

Hopefully some of what I said was helpful! Overall I think it's an awesome start, and I really love the work on the skin. I especially like the hilights around her waist and the muscles near her knee area.

Wow, nice. :) I always have thought poser to be some kind of a curseword and i myself use the word poserish to describe models like these http://www.greylight.com/poserhair.html, so you can image what i first thought. But when i got over it i really started wondering if i have got too low details on the armor and boots. And the another thing was the pose. Maybe it is quite stiff. Should i change the stance to be more flowing? Maybe the left hand should be adjusted to be more horizontally oriented. Or something. Anyhow, thanks a bunch! Now it just remains to be seen if i get around to fix it ;)

Hehe I think poser has improved since those images.

Here (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/who/character_traits/celebrity/1966802_urban_beauty.php?id=1966802) is a photo I found for hair blowing in the wind. Notice how the hair has some weight to it, making it have a bit more shape than just flying straight outwards? When I was looking at your image again I noticed that the hair was a little on the straight side to be blown by a wind :).

Here (http://www2.victoriassecret.com/collection/?cgname=OSSHUBOOVIL&cgnbr=OSSHUBOOVIL&rfnbr=2096&cm_mmc=goo-_-shu-_-boots-_-18167) is a reference for some high heeled boots. I think the position of the foot in the boots in your image is a little awkward. The arch of the sole seems pretty uncomfortable, it's usually much less of a curve and the main arch is positioned farther back (if that makes any sense). The hump on the top of the foot is too pronounced also. The slope down to the toe is either more gentle or almost completely straight up and down depending on the height of the heel.

I hope you don't mind that I did a quick paintover. It's far from perfect too, I think I took in the arm too much, and the pose isn't anything spectacular. But I am hoping to show how it looks with the fingers in a more relaxed position, the hair with more shape, and the shape of the shoes.

Lol, sorry to startle you man! :D I certainly didn't mean that terrible quality, no way! (Man the ones in that link are horrendous aren't they!!) I just meant a I could see a hint of Poser. Didn't mean to offend you.

What I was really trying to say about the skin is that with Poser renders the skin always has black shades which kills the translucency and yours has a bit of black at the edges. I think you should just tone that down.

Sorry again :)

zyanthia: Thanks for interesting tips. I agree completely with the hands and hair although i knowingly decided to go with a little more stylized hair than it would be in real life. But i'm not sure about the feet though. Maybe they need to be a little bit bigger but to me that forward leg looks to be a bit in awkward position. But Thanks very much on pointing me those things :)

pap87: Nooo, dont apologize =) I dont feel like im wronged. I'm only happy that i got some good critics. And i actually did an exercise where i at least tried to drop the posercolours.

Its quite unfinished and completely drawn with mouse(paiiiin) on ps. The whole point was to try to use the colours better.

Wow! Drawn completely with a mouse? You must have a lot of patience! I think the only crit I have as far as the colors go is that the shadows on the arm look a little too "burnt" (as in the dodge/burn tool). Other than that, I love how you did the jewelry and the tat. Keep it up!

lol, i just looove that tool!(maybe too much) I use it every time i run out of patience. You tend to do that when try twenty times for that perfect arch with mouse :). As to my wacom or lack of it, my old one broke and don't have money to buy new one. I dont really want to buy anything else than intuos and boy they're expensive.
Well long thing short. Thanks for the tip i try to use the burn tool a bit less next time.

I can only imagine what it'd be like to attempt doing CG without my wacom. I really do love the dodge/burn tool, especially for hilights and retouching photos. Very understandable use of it! I'm still in awe of the mouse-work :D. Tragic about the tablet though :(

Update: Another WIP from me. I doubt seriously will i ever finish one painting :). In this i tried to do more like a scene instead of a simple character. I have always found it difficult to hook the foreground to the rest of the piece. It always seems to pop out to eye. However i think i did better job in this than usually. (My last piece before i can switch my old mouse to a brand new intuos3!) What do you think?
