I am in the market for getting a new HD display to play my Xbox 360 on as well as use it as an extra monitor. I've been searching around and there are a ton of options out there, but I am somewhat limited to price. I'd rather not spend more than about one grand. Also, this will be for the bedroom/home office so a not too small and a not too large of TV's or monitors is what I am looking for. Here are two options I found:

A Samsung LN-S2651D 26" (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=product.jsp&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=425130&is=REG&si=feat#goto_itemInfo) which is an LCD HDTV. It has a very nice contrast ratio which is key in video games from what I can tell. It also has some HDMI inputs for the future :). The max resolution on this is 1366 x 768.

The other is a Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP Wide-Screen Flat Panel Monitor (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-4335). This has quite a few connections for a computer monitor with VGA, DVI, and Component connections for example. This monitor has a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 with a contrast ratio of 1000:1 (compared to the Samsung's 4000:1). My problem with this is, I have heard mixed reviews about the connections. They are either very good or really bad. Also, will this LCD display in 1080p (which I prefer to the 720p of the Samsung) or even 720p for that matter?

If anyone has any information that may help, it will be much appreciated. I would rather get a monitor for I could use it a lot more, but I want something that displays motion very well.

I use a Dell 2405 both for work and for playing my Xbox 360 through component cables and it looks simply beautiful, I would seriously recommend the Dell 2407 you won´t regret it.

I have a 2405 as well. I have also set up a 2407. I prefer the 05, as the picture was better, among other things. The 2405/07 have a max resolution of 1920x1200, which should fit a 1080p sized image...

Thanks for the replies so far. I was curious, do computer monitors display progressive images?

So the 05 version has a better image in your opinion? Hmm...that seems odd that an older version has the better image, but I'll take your word for it :).

Oh, I read the other day that Dell and Samsung were teaming up for a 27-inch display that is supposed to be amazing. Has anyone else heard something of this?

The 07 uses the same panel found in Samsung's 24" display. There are plenty of reports of its performance all over the net. In most cases the 05 is more preferable. Though maybe now that the 07 has been out for some months, most of the bugs have been worked out.

I just know, from personal experience, the 07 produces a very uneven back lighting, which results in darker and brighter spots in the image. Also, the colors didn't seem as vibrant. Alot of this is subjective, and I was not able to perform a side by side comparison. So take that with a grian of salt :)

I just know I love my 05 :P

i dont think it has anywhere near the same input options as the dell 2405/7 though. it appears to be just dvi and vga. the dell 24" is probably the most versatile computer monitor for tv applications.

As far as I know all computer screens are progressive due to the fact that interlaced would be worthless when sitting up close.

Progressive = sharper
Interlaced = faster

I think that's the reason why computer screens usually are a tad expensier than tv screens due to that they are progressive AND has fast refresh rates. :shrug:

Slap me if I'm wrong. :D

interlacing has more to do with signalling than the screen itself.

most lcd's have a natively progressive timing controller, meaning it will change the entire image once per cycle. so an lcd tv thats recieving an interlaced signal will first do one of various types of deinterlacing in the monitor controller, even if its as simple as adding black lines and keeping the 60/50fps rate.

so, no, there no difference between propper lcd tv's and monitors beyond the controller, inputs, aspect, and resolution. if you want your monitor to recieve an interlaced signal, it will need the propper inputs, or youll need to convert first.

I was just reading that the 2405 doesn't have HDCP like the 2407. Has anyone else heard this?

Right, but you can still find it at places and with lots saying that the 2405 is better I thought it may be something to consider. I'll still think about it somemore. Keep the comments coming if you think you might have something useful :). Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. It has cleared several questions of mine up.

people have been complaining about banding issues with the new dell hdcp enables screens (20 and 24)

this wouldnt be a panel issue but a controller issue. it also seems to only affect the dvi port.
ive never seen the banding issues personally, so i dont know how noticable it is in real life, or if it affects every screen.

so in that regard, the 2405 may be better. but the panel in the 2405 has its own share of issues, such as viewing angle and black levels. with tv as the primary use though i think viewing angle wont be of any concern.
