View Full Version : High Rez -> Copy -> Paste in Pace = Horizontal Scan lines
Terro 12-06-2006, 08:16 PM Exactly what my title sais, lol.
I'm currently working on a image thats roughtly abour 4K X 2.5K pixes in size. When ever I copy the canvas and paste it in place I get a hint of horizontal lines in the copied layer. Even when I erase a part of the copied layer it sill has the lines. If I hide it, they dissapears. At first I though it was my eyes or my monitor so I saved the image into a JPG and took it to Photoshop and the lines still remained.
This is a big issue for me since I tend to copy/paste a lot in my work, can anyone help.
Pretty please with a chery on top?

Hi,
I can't test this to see if it makes a difference since I don't have the problem you describe, but on the off chance it'll help:
1. Select the area you want to copy and paste (but don't copy it).
2. Click the F key to activate the Layer Adjuster tool.
3. Hold down the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (Mac) and click inside the selection to lift a duplicate of the selected area to a Layer.
The end result is basically the same as copy and paste but, at least in Windows, it doesn't put a copy on the Clipboard. That makes me think the process must be different.... and possibly better. In addition, the duplicate is lifted straight up exactly above the selected area.... never misaligned as sometimes happens with copy and paste.
Good luck!

I found the problem, some how I must have enabled the impasto effect. Thanks for your advice Jin, while I found the impasto option while testing out your F key.

Great! I didn't think of Impasto being the cause.
Thanks, that prompted me to set up a keyboard shortcut to Toggle Impasto: Shift+* since the little asterisk reminds me of a miniature Impasto icon. ;)
Now I'll probably forget all about that keyboard shortcut.

Hey Jin,
You know any way to turn off this impasto effect. Everytime I copy and paste it pastes as Impasto, it's starting to get on my nerves, lol. I have to keep clicking on the litthe Blue Star button everytime I paste or open up a new document. I'm sure I did something to turn this function on by default, I just don't know how to disable it.

Hi,
Whenever we use an Impasto enable brush variant, Impasto lighting and depth are automatically turned on (enabled).
The only ways to avoid that from the start are:
Use only brush variants that, by default, are not Impasto enabled.
Each time you select an Impasto enabled brush variant, before painting, go to the Brush Controls' Impasto palette and in the Draw to: drop down list, change the option from either Color and Depth or Depth (whichever is the current option), to Draw to: Color.
If your image already contains Impasto painting and you don't want to lose that effect but want to continue working without additional Impasto lighting and depth being added to the image, do the following:
NOTE: You're going to make an exact, flattened copy of all parts of the image that currently contain Impasto painting, then paste that flattened copy onto your working image as a Layer. This disconnects those parts of the image from Painter's Impasto lighting and depth controls but retains the appearance of thick Impasto brush strokes. In other words, those brush strokes are no longer "live" Impasto painting.
1. Close the Eye icons for all Layers you don't want to include in the flattened copy (i.e. Text, Shapes, etc.)
2. With only the imagery displayed that you want to include, use File > Clone.
3. With the Clone active, use Select > All (or Ctrl/Command+A).
4. With your working image again active, use Edit > Paste (or Ctrl/Command+V).
5. Check to make sure the pasted Clone copy Layer is aligned with the Canvas:
Double-click the pasted Clone Layer to open the Layer Attributes dialog box. Then make sure the Top and Left fields both say 0 (zero), then click the OK button. This makes the top left corner of the pasted Clone Layer align with the top left corner of the Canvas at 0,0 (or 0 pixels down from the top of the Canvas and 0 pixels from the left side of the Canvas).
6. Close the Clone Layer's Eye icon to make that Layer invisible.
7. In the Layers palette, hold down the Shift key and highlight all other Layers that were included in the Clone.
8. Use Ctrl/Command+G to Group those Layers.
9. Close the Group's Eye icon. Now you should see only the flattened Clone Layer.
10. Save the file in RIFF format with a new file name so you'll know which file includes the Group of original Layers that contained "live" Impasto painting.
11. Delete the Group (only after you've saved the file in Step 10).
12. Save the file in RIFF format again, with another new file name so you'll know which file contains only the Clone Layer, and no "live" Impasto painting.
13. Continue working, using only brush variants that are not by default Impasto enabled or brush variants that were by default Impasto enabled but have been changed in the Brush Controls' Impasto palette to Draw to: Color.
TIPS:
Save often, in Painter's RIFF format so if you inadvertently do one of the following, and need to open a previously saved version of your image, you won't have lost much work:
Avoid clicking the Impasto icon located in the upper right corner of the image window.
If you accidentaly begin painting with an Impasto enabled brush variant, immediately use Ctrl/Command+Z to Undo then click the Impasto icon to again disable Impasto lighting and depth.
