Title: Orishas
Name: Antonio Javier Caparo
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop
ORISHAS is the word used by some afro-american religions to refer to their deities. They are represented in many ways: through catholic icons, single geometric signs, objects, colors. For me they are two birds, one over each shoulder looking back and forth while you are right there, in the middle, in the volatile present.
I hope you enjoy this image.

Wow, this piece is great. I love the birds they really have a weight and texture to them. The fractal art on his t-shirt is great too. Nice work and good concept. Almost reminds me of the 'demon to the right and angel to the left bit'. Very, cool, I am anxious to see more of your work.

that is stunning. i usually try to point out areas that might need to be touched up but I am hard to find anything on this.
my favorite illustrator and painter is peter deseve and this painting is probably the closest i have seen anyone come to his work in digital format. the hair and the atmosphere really remind me of his style and i love it.
i would totally buy a print of this.

Hi everybody. Thanks for all the comments! I really apreciate them.
Knaaker: Peter de Seve is one of my favorites too. I was not thinking about him when I did this image but, now hat you mentioned it, there is something from him in it for sure. Perhaps the use of loose pencil line in some areas beneath the color, something around the head and the hair. Thanks for that point. We keep always looking for artist aorund us and it is nice when someone finds those infuences in our works.
Thanks a lot!

Hi again everybody
Thanks a lot for your comments!
Soverign: After the Spanish conquered America (I mean South America) in the XV century they brought African slaves. Those persons came with their religions but were not allowed to practice it so they mixed it with the catholic icons and rituals. With time this syncretism became a root. That`s why in Cuba and other Caribbean countries we call them in general Afro-cuban or Afro-american religions. Anyway each one of them has its own name depending on the country.

Eric: I studied painting a long time ago but I do not paint frequently. I do lots of ink drawings and from time to time I make some watercolour illustration but I´ve been working digitally lately. I can tell I miss acrylicis a lot. Hope I have time to go back to it some day, at least for fun.

Welcome back!
Andre, it i great to hear that. I feel flattered. I love animation too, one of my passions.
Eric, you can find some of my traditional illustrations here: http://www.shannonassociates.com
In the home page you'll find a thumbnail named "Caparo". Follow it and you will see my portfolio. In the first page there is only one traditional ink drawing, the face of an old man. It has some color pencil and acrylics for the light areas. In the second and third pages there are some pencil drawings and in the last page (5) you´ll see some color pencil illustrations for children books. Nothing there done completely in acrylics.
Hope you like it!
