Squid! You rule!
Nothing to crit until you put the head on... keep it up!
Very nice start / WIP.
Arms, hands, legs and feet seem a little square though (box modeling?) - the feet are a tad to flat also. Be sure to post your progress.

I like his chest and spine, the lower portion of his legs are a bit too much out of proportion for me. Maybe reduce the size of the heel. I like the little bones or horns that stick out of his body.

Really not sure about those feet, something flat and Sub-D about them!! Otherwise coming on nice, lets see a head!!!

Did you use matrix extrude on the claws? I did a dino and used matrix extrude. Not completly satisfied with the results. Just wondering what method you used.
Looks great all 'round, though!

Hi Squidinc
Verg good organic modeling. I notice you like to put some
image as background. Is this a contrast effect or you are
actually using to boost the GI?? pls advise

nice job again !! are you using poly(point by point) modeling or box modeling for your characters ??? any tutorials on how you model ??

i agree, squid you need to write a tut! god, your modeling is AWESOME i am lovin everything about it, i think the big feet look great, i think it looks good out of proportion...it gives it a bit more character.

Hi all, thanks for the feedback so far
@mindways : I usually put a simple background just bring out the model from the background ( takes a few seconds in photoshop ), I just find it looks nicer than a flat colour, no GI or radiosity, just omni lights
@bobzilla: I just used the extrude and bevel tools, matrix extrude tends to go nuts on me
@sebek27: I use box modelling for all my stuff, I'm still experimenting really as a lot of my stuff is quite simple
and heres a small update :p
its still gonna be a gargoyle type creature but with more of warrior style to it he'll have some sort of staff weapon or big hack n slash kinda sword.

I think I'm done with the modelling now ( unless you can think of anything else )

Is that wire shot the cage or the end result? If it's the cage  how do you work with so many polys?
Edit: I meant to say this too... That's a nice mesh. :)

I love you squid... no... seriously...I *LOVE* you maaaan...
I stared at it forever and the only thing I can crit is the wing texture, I don't think it quite fits... I like how it's scuffed up but you should probably go for more of a blue tone....
It's your model though!!!
You said by month's end you'd have a tutorial for your scene set up... did you still mean that?
YOU RULE!
squidinc

erm.. :surprised
yup I'm still working on the spider one, although the end of the month thing is looking a little unlikely, it will be done eventually though

well.. thats actually the cage, ehehe:hmm:
it's still workable though and rigging it isn't a problem so far :)
ignore the wings though they're not really editable mesh they're lofted so they're basically just splines

Wow, good on ya, I could never make a mesh as clean as that with that many polys, I just don't have the patients. :D
That looks great, you'll have to do a short, I'd love to see him animated. :)

Looks REALLY good man!
Only thing I can think of is that the claws looks a little too clean maybe...
Maybe add some dirt and some displacement to simulate some cracks or something like that.
Something strikes me as odd about the wing texture too,
not sure what'd make it look right tho...
Maybe a darker colour, and some veins, and possibly some tearing??
The pattern on there now looks kinda strange.

Squidinc, how did you do the scratches on his wings? I need some scratches for a model I'm doing at the moment and they would be perfect.

@deathcarrot: yup, all textures are procedural :hmm:

@Phasmatis its a bhodi nut fusion texture with sema (sp?) and fbm in the two channels, and then use noise for a mask

I think he just renders the model out with the alpha, then copies, enlarges and blurs it in photoshop, and then just puts a 3rd layer underneath those 2, with a suitable bg colour... am i right squid?
