Hello all,

I have been watching the challenges and hoping to participate. I was thinking I would get in on the action once school was out for the summer, but then this challenge came along, and I just couldn't help myself. I know I am getting a late start, but hey, it will definitely be good practice, and Im not kidding myself that I might actually win.

Since this is my first entry to the challenge I will just let you all know that I work primarily in Lightwave, although I know Max pretty well and some other modelers such as Multigen Creator. I have a decent background in traditional art and am currently studying Digtial Media at the University of Central Florida.

Ok enough chatter- back to the challenge. I have loved mythology since 6th grade, and became fasciniated with the Egyptian culture and mythology while studying art history in high school. Probably one of my favorite gods is Anubis. (And yes I know he is rather popular...) (and no, i'm not trying to one-up you, Leigh, I love how your Anubis is coming along- and I'm going to try and take it in a different direction. :D )

OK here is a quick sketch I did up to give you guys an idea what i have in mind. The pose will definitely change, and I definitely plan on adding more to his costume...

Im off to model!

Ok, here is a small update.... been modeling on it since I posted my sketch a few hours ago. Just getting the basic shape down and putting in some simple details. I really wish I had my dog here for a reference. All I have is my dumb cat. :p

I am more of a realtime modeler- so this is one of my first ventures into complex modeling. So any feedback you guys can give me I would definitely appreciate it. Thanks.

Also, here is the underlying poly structure:

Ok, well I have hit the bottom of the second page twice and still no replies, so i guess i should give you guys some more to look at. This is my first time modeling a male body, and only the second time modeling a complex human. So I know there is stuff I can improve.

I started working on the body today. Getting most of the definition shaped out... a lot more tweaking is needed but i am happy with how its coming out. I cant give you a pretty render cause im currently rendering out another project, but here a few screen shots.

Hey J, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I plan on having some of those arm bangle jewelry, and maybe a few small pieces of light armor. Not too much though, since he is a god and therefore doesnt really need it ;)

Skunk > Sorry if i am imposing on your identity at all, but just so you know my name originated from Lockheed's small, secret development team which was responsible for the SR71 Blackbird and F117 Stealth Fighter. It made sense with my field and career in Digital Media since we are also dealing with "tomorrow's technology today."
Cheers though, to a fellow skunk

I should have another update up tonight. :wip: Glad y'all like it so far.

Ok, here is some more work. Got the legs shaped out with a little muscle detail and resemblence of paws... I also changed the brow of the face to be closer to the concept drawing. Haven't touched the forearms yet, but started working on bicep. The back needs a little more definition, and some work on the butt.

I also want to detail the mouth. So far I have a tounge, but don't really know how to go about doing the gums and teeth. I guess extrude out the gums and then the teeth (like I did with his claws...) I guess Ill just have to dive in and give it a shot. I would just like him in the final pose to be bearing his teeth... If any of you have tips or mehtods, i would appreciate it.

Here are the renders:

I have to try and work on this inbetween my busy schedule and wrapping up projects for school, but 10 min here and an hour or so there will hopefully add up to a finished product at the end. (April 5th is going to come real fast!)

Back to work :wip: .... then sleep :scream: <yawn>

Sorry I havent had time to work on this or post any updates, I had to go out of town for a day, and had a lot of school work to do. Luckily, I found a few hours to do some work on it today. The hands need some more work, and so does the rest of the body. I think I have the arms pretty well formed out now...

http://home.cfl.rr.com/digitalskunkwork/anubis08.jpg

Next step is to try and get it closer to my concept sketch. Right now i think he is a little too stocky. The physique I had in mind was similar to Brad Pitt in "Fight Club."... so right now Anubis is way too stocky. I will probably narrow down his head a little and give him less of a barrel chest, and a thinner, more defined abdomen.

As for his coloration, I am trying to figure out how to get the color gradient to work to blend the areas between the dark dog and human skin. Hopefully i can get it working tonight.

Will post more updates tonight, with closeups of hands, head, feet, belt, etc. :wip:

My computer is acting up, but I managed to get this render off. Finally figured out how to get the color gradient to work.

I did narrow the head a little and moved the lips around so he doesnt look as much like Scooby Doo.

Let me know what y'all think.

Wow. I just did not have enough time to work on this challenge. Too many things with school and life got in the way. But, I feel it was a good start, and good practice for future challenges.

Here is another little render, with a change or two. I lost the changes on the file with the gradient and havent re-done it. I will probably fix it for the final render and try to get him in some sort of pose.

I'll have more time over the summer to give it my all.

Thanks man. You should participate in some of the challenges this summer (after you finish senior project!) It's really good practice, and you can get some great feedback. (Especially if you post updates frequently.) I plan on doing every challenge over the summer, and continue with them fall semester if I have the time.

Dont forget, there is a section to look for CG/3D jobs on the main page of this forum. :D

Gotta play darts again sometime.

Do you have to constantly rub in how you are better than me at everything in life?! even darts!

Heh, I definitely plan to participate. I love this forum and cgchat.com as well. I've learned so much from them and hope to learn more.
