have you already tried to click the layer bar in the layers window? click it to highlight it, then hit ctrl+c (for windows) and then ctrl+v, maybe that works, but I'm not sure, because I'm also an AE newbie but I'm sure, that I already faced this situation and I think it worked

I must admit that I have no idea, and this hidden After Effects forum is also very badly frequented by the others - maybe there are just too few AE users on CGTalk.
Maybe you want to ask this question at Creative Cow (http://www.creativecow.net/index.php)
They have the most active After Effects community I've seen on the net. I hope this helps you out :wavey:
What do you want to do?
Copy a layer from one composition into another compostion
or
Duplicate a layer in the same composition?
To copy from one comp to another, select the layer in the composition window, press ctrl+C go to the other composition window and press ctrl+V.
To duplicate one layer in the same composition you first select the layer in the composition window and them press Ctrl+D
I hope that helps you!
See Ya!
