I was wondering, what type of deadlines games animators work to?
I'm thinking of getting in to games animation and can do a pretty solid walk/run/jump/attack/etc cycle within 3 to five days.
Is that good enough?? I hear games companies are notorious for their tight deadlines.

hey,

I suppose this is the token answer - but it depends on what you're animating. As a standardization, pretty much every games company I have worked at has broken down animation tasks into half day and full day multiples for scheduling ( i.e, you may be assigned as little as half a day, or multiples of days depending on the complexity )

pretty much as standard you most commonly get one working day ( approx 8 hours ) per animation. So a walk cycle or a jump as you described would normally be done in this time. Animations that are usually half a day are much simpler, on less important characters, or small fixes on animation already "completed". Saying all that - I have worked on more intricate sequences that have taken anywhere up to 2 weeks to complete. Just not to make you panic - I find that as you get more experienced that a full day per animation is usually very comfortable.

I`ve worked at companies where scheduling is very rigid ( ubisoft for example ), but many companies will be less harsh on strict deliverables for animation, the best places will leave you to create your own scehdule depending on what you think needs to be delivered for a certain feature, which will then be verified with your lead. Its common too that if you occasionally need an extra day or two to complete your tasks its not the end of the world... inevitably things further down the production nearly always get cut to accomodate innacuracies in scheduling tasks anyway.

hope that helps.
