View Full Version : Constraining strokes...?

Hey, all. I love Painter's ability to rotate the canvas on the fly, but I've got a problem. I want to be able to rotate the canvas and then paint along a straight line. I know you can use shift to constrain the line to 45-degree increments--but those angles are relative to the unrotated canvas.

Let's say I rotate the canvas 30 degrees clockwise and shift-paint. The stroke will appear to be tilted 30 degrees to the right, too. I want to rotate the canvas 30 degrees, shift-paint, and see the stroke appear to be vertical or horizontal (i.e. when I un-rotate the canvas, the line will appear to be tilted 30 degrees to the left).

I know I can just use V to go into straight line mode, and perhaps that's my best bet. But I'm 90% positive I saw another artist do what I'm describing here, and I'd very much like to be able to.

(On a side note, I have a lot of trouble getting the stroke to go in the correct direction when I shift-paint. For example, I try to do a vertical stroke, and it ends up going along the upward-right 45-degree or even horizontal. Anyone know how to remedy this?)

Thanks in advance!

Meh, here's a little bump. I really would appreciate some help on this, even if it just means telling me that this was only possible in previous versions of Painter. (I'm using Painter IX.)

I suppose you could paint constraining to a path, though not as quick as just holding shift, since you have to draw a path first, then draw your line.

Clicking the V key to paint Straight Line Strokes seems faster, and more versatile, than using the Shift key method, and a lot faster than using the Align to Path method unless you're going to be painting a lot of strokes in the same direction. In that case, you could draw one line with the Pen tool, then move that Shape around to paint more lines. Using the Align to Path method, you can also get expressive strokes, not possible using the other methods.

So many ways to skin a cat!

This is something I have suggested a couple of times before, I believe it would be very useful...
